I have one of those small USB plugin memory chips 256 mb that I use to transfer files from one computer to another in my home.

I am having trouble transferring Quicken 2003 files from one G4 computer running OS 9 to the other G4 computer which is running OS X.

Both computers are running the Quicken 2003, I run it on the OS X and my wife runs it on the OS 9 computer.

I can transfer a Quicken file from the OS X computer to the OS 9 computer ok but when I try to transfer a file back the other way it turns into a folder with 3 other folders inside it containing odd files that I can't open.

Any idea why it is doing this.

These may be invisible folders in OS X, but OS 9 does not understand the way in which OS X makes files invisible. It could also be due to the fact that your USB pen drive is formatted MSDOS. If it is, try reformatting it using Mac OS Extended.

Steven I haven't had any problems in the past transferring files from other apps between the 2 Macs, the specs say it is for PC and Mac platforms.

Could it still be formatted MSDOS and if so I can I tell if it is.

I do have bootable OS 9 on my machine so maybe I should try booting up to OS 9 and plug in the flash drive and see if the files are still unreadable.

Jim,

Just plug the pen drive in to your computer, then open Disk Utility and select the pen drive from the left side list. The status info should tell you what format is being used.

The problem with using the MSDOS format on Macs is that the DOS filesystem does not recognize filenames of more than 11 characters, does not handle lower and upper case in a filename, does not understand the resource fork in some Mac files, and does not understand invisibility. If you are not transporting files to a DOS or Windows box, then there's no need or advantage to leaving the pen drive formatted MSDOS.

Jim,

Plug the drive in, open Disk Utility, select the USB drive from the left side list, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Select Mac OS Extended from the drop down menu, then click on the Erase button. Wait until the device re-mounts on the Desktop. That's it.

Tried to do like you said but it only gives me two options from the Volume Format drop down menu and they were MS-DOS File System ( FAT16) and MS-DOS File System

OK, then give this a try:

1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.

2. After DU loads select the drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

3. Set the number of partitions to 1. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume mounts on the Desktop.

4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended. Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.

6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take a few minutes due to the zeroing, so be patient and wait until the drive reappears on the Desktop.
