When you drag an item to the Trash it says it will be deleted immediately and does! Don't know why it begun to do this and I can't find a preference to change this situation.

How can I recover the original format for the trash basket?

Where are these files originally located? Normally, the Finder only gives this message for those located on network drives; the Trash only stores files of local origin.

Ben,

The files are located on the local Hard drive not on a network.

Hello Terence

I guess by "local" you mean an external disk attached directly to the Mac yes?

What format is the external drive... and can you check the permissions in Get Info?

Make sure the drive has read and write permissions for your account - and try turning on the "ignore ownership on this volume" option. Basically this is a permissions problem - the trash for that volume lives in a hidden folder on the drive, if you don't have permission to write to that folder then items on that volume that are placed in the trash can have to be "deleted immediately"

Let me know how you get on

Ben,
No I meant my Hard Drive. (the external drive I have has "ignore.. switched on and does allow docs etc to be dragged to the trash without asking to delete immediately) I had realised that it was probably a permissions problem and have used the original discs and the Disc Utility to perform a permissions repair on the computer hard drive.

I have also noticed that the system wont allow me to update the eyeTV updater, saying i dont have permission to do it. I haven't checked if any other updater is also refused.
Just in case it was a major problem, i reinstalled the system, but the problem is still there.
I checked the get info for my hard drive and the read & write are switched on. The owner is switched on the System & group is admin, acess is read & write, other is read & write, so I don't know what else to do. thats why I am stumped.

Allan,

Thanks for that. The entry of sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash to the terminal did the trick.
Just out of curiosity how does this occur?
