TICKET ARCHIVE -> Two VPNs, or VPN and Proxy Server?

Hi,

I'm a student working at a university other than my own this summer. At this school, all laptops have to use VPN to access the wireless network. To access the library resources of my own library when I'm home or off-campus, I usually use VPN. Is there a way to configure my network settings so I can have both VPNs going at the same time, one to connect to the wireless network, and one to connect to my school's library?

Another option might be to use VPN to access the wireless and then access my school's proxy server to get to the library. When I tried to set that up, though (System Prefs -> Network -> Show: VPN -> Proxies -> Automatic Proxy Configuration -> the URL), I lost the ability to see any web pages at all. When I got rid of the automatic proxy configuration, I could get on the web again right away.

I'm on a Powerbook G4 running OS 10.3.9. Thanks very much!!

You need to set up two VPNs, and then connect to the second one once you have connected to the first one.

To do this, open up Internet Connect.

Enter in the appropriate details in the first VPN connection box. Then go to File->New VPN Connection and choose the appropriate type of VPN (PPTP or L2TP). This will give you another VPN icon on the Internet Connect toolbar. Enter the details for this connection.

Then, connect to the first VPN for your wireless network, and then to the second for the VPN to your home network.

The only time you are likely to run into problems would be if there are identical network addresses used on both VPN servers.

Cheers,

Joel

Hi Joel,

Thanks very much for responding! I have both VPNs set up now, but for some reason the second one (that is, the one to connect to my school's library) won't connect - I get an error message saying that the server is not responding. My friend's computer, though (a PC that is going through the same wireless network) can access the library resources fine using the same two VPNs. Do you know what could be causing the trouble on my computer?

Thanks!

What IP addresses are being used? Do you have conflicting ranges?

What messages appear in the log window of Internet Connect?

When you have the initial VPN connected, what results do you get from running the command "netstat -nr" in a terminal window?

Cheers,

Joel

Hi Joel,

According to the Network area of System Preferences, my airport IP address (that is, when I go to System Prefs -> Network -> Show Airport -> TCP/IP) is 192.168.1.53. My IP address for the first VPN (Sys Prefs ->Network->Show VPN1) is 193.144.192.20, and the router is 193.144.192.3. Since I'm not connecting to the second one, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Here's the last page or so of messages from the Internet Connect log window:
