Description:
I am getting an error message "type 4 error when I try to open my Fax STF software. This is the software that cam preinstalled on the machine. I have run Norton Utilities, rebuilt the desktop and zapped the PRAM with Techtools to no avail. No other program seems to be affected so far. The program starts to open then flashes off to the error message.

A Type 4 error is formally known as a "Divide by zero error." According to my favorite Mac troubleshooting bible, "Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters" by Ted Landau, the "problem is almost assuredly specific to the program in use." It can also be caused by an extension conflict.
If the FAX-STF program has worked before, it's almost certainly not a program bug. Possibly, the program has become corrupted. Re-install it.
If that doesn't help, you'll need to look for an extension conflict. If you have lots of extensions, this can be very tedious. If you own Conflict Catcher, it's somewhat less tedious. Let me know if you need some help with this.
