I've been having issues with a shared library problem and have been unable to find a remedy, so I was going to attempt to reload the system.
When I tried to boot from the CD by holding the c key on restart, the mac displayed a black screen with a bunch of code and a message that said that I needed to restart. I then ejected the disc and changed my preferences to use the CD as the startup disc. It now comes up with the same black screen and message, but I'm unable to eject the disc. Any ideas?

I finally got the CD to eject (held down eject button on restart), but still have a problem opening some apps because of a shared file error.

What is the error message exactly?

Again, what is the error message exactly?

The error when I tried to launch certain apps (mostly Adobe apps, but also QuickBooks) is the following:

Application Launch Failure
The application "Illustrator" could not be launched because of a shared library error:
".<>"

Here's the remainder of the error message, it didn't show up on the last post:

".<>"

I don't think macosx.com likes angle brackets; probably thinks you're trying to use HTML, which isn't supported here. Just tell me what's between the angle brackets.

Separately, I suggest you try zapping the PRAM/NVRAM.

Here's the message, I've used dashes instead of the more than/less than symbols.

"-Paloma--CarbonLib--CFMPriv_SpeechSynthesis---"

I think a system reinstall is a smart idea. Did you try zapping PRAM?

Yes, zapping the PRAM didn't make any difference. The weird thing is that I can't boot from my System disc to reinstall, I end up with a black screen with gray code that makes no sense to me... and a scrolling message in several languages instructing me to reboot.

Download and install Applejack. Restart in single user mode (essentially what you're seeing with the black screen and gray text) by holding Command+S on restart. At the prompt, type the following command and press return:

applejack auto restart

After Applejack finishes a series of maintenance routines, your computer will restart. Then, again try to boot from the CD.

Also, to be sure, have you run Software Update for all available updates?

I've been installing all of the OS updates as they become available. I'll try the Applejack and let you know what happens.
Thanks.

Ran Applejack. After the autorestart, I tried to reboot from the system disc and ended up the black screen again. The last line at the bottom of the screen reads:
panic: we are hanging here...

Whadya think?

No more ideas at the moment. Sorry. Reopening question.
