i have a standard ibook G4 with 60GB hardrive and 256mb memory.

my problem is when i insert a blank disc to burn a message appears: 'startup disc doesn't have enough empty space, error code -34'.

i have deleted files i don't need and it hasn't helped and i can't archive other photos etc to make more space because i'm unable to burn to disc.

does this mean i need to buy more memory or is there something else i can do?

as well as the not enough space message it also says "to burn disc finder needs space on the startup disc equal to the size of the disc" and automatically ejects blank cd.

How much of your hard drive is taken up? Do you have a partition set up with OSX on a very small partition?
