Hello,
I am using Disk Utility to try to burn a 4.6GB .dmg file. I compressed a movie into a folder and I created a disk image file. While I am able to Burn the .dmg file, the disk acts as if there is something being written to it but when it's finished there is no data on the disk. When going to Info the disk shows 20.2 MB used but there is nothing on the disk. Any suggestions deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rick,
One of your problems may be that the file is too big to fit on a DVD. Even though the disk says that it has a 4.7gig capacity, you really can only burn 4.3gigs.

Can you give me a little bit more information as well about how you compressed the movie and if you want it to be a file on the DVD or a movie that you can play in your DVD player? I am curious, too, did it make a .dmg file or an .img file?

Hello Leigh and thank you for your reply. My goal is to copy a DVD movie. First I used Mac the Ripper, that file turned out to be 7.something GB, I then used DVDremaster to get it down to 4.36 GB (or something very close to 4.36GB i can't recall). At any rate I then made (from Disk Utility) a .dmg file from the recompressed (4.36 GB file). I then selected the .dmg file in DU and selected Burn. The disk did burn (Your disk is ready) but there were no files on the disk. Veddy strange! When I highlighted the disk on the desktop and did Get Info, it read there was 20.2 GB used with 4.35GB available. It's a puzzle all right! :-) Any suggestions deeply appreciated....thanks again for your reply.
Best,
Rick

Is this a movie that you bought from the store that you are trying to copy?
I have to make you aware that copying commercial DVD movies is illegal and is not something that I can help you with.

Yes, I bought and paid for the movie. I am also completely aware of the law regarding commercial media and pirating. Since I paid for this movie I want to make a copy so that I can watch the DVD movie on the plane nest week and my wife can enjoy watching it at home. Do you really think a person can be that naive with respect to pirating DVDs? Please. I think you are throwing a red herring out here because if you had an answer to my problem you would have mentioned something besides the remark you made. But thanks anyway.

Actually, Rick, you would be really surprised by the questions that we get and what people think. And, yes, there are a lot of naive people out there. It is my legal obligation to let you know about piracy laws in case you weren't aware of them. Paying for a movie does not give you the right to make copies of it. I work in the DVD business, so, no, I am not just throwing out a red herring. I am trying to make a living.

As far as me knowing the answer to your question, I may or may not be able to help you but I will try. My suggestion in this case, is if you already have ripped the DVD and have it on your hard drive, and the only reason that you want to have the movie is so you can watch it on the plane, why not just leave the ripped movie on your drive. You can use Apple's DVD player to open up the Video_TS folder and watch it just as you would any movie in your drive. In Apple's DVD player, choose Open DVD Media then select the Video_TS folder. You will then need to press the Play button and it will begin the video.

As far as being able to burn a Disk Image to a DVD - the first thing that I would ask is if you have tried to burn just regular files using this method? If not, try to do so and see if it burns correctly. If it works with the regular files, then there is something in what MTR did and/or DVDremaster did that it didn't like.
