Hello,

I am having a problem changing my network password in system preferences-when I enter the new password in and hit apply it reverts to the old password, or what I assume to be the old password (it is the same number of dots-my new password is longer)

This problem was previously explained on your site, and I tried the suggestion of hitting the lock and entering my user password, and then changin the setting, but no luck-it still reverts.

What the other person had to say about the problem is pasted below-it is identical to mine, other than I am using 10.2.8 and a Powerbook g4

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you.

each time i go to change the password to authenticate my dialup service the operating system simply reverts back to the old password. this is happening on two of my macs. both g3's, both running 10.3.8. i do this in the network preferences/network/PPP panel. it actually has a check box designed for just this. i check it to "save changes" but it seems another program is overriding it. the 15 digit pw snaps right back to the older 7 digit one. ( the new password is cleared through my service provider.) internet connection application works fine to connect me but on both macs safari doesn't recognize server. doesn't seem to even want to connect (because of this?)

You cannot tell what password is set simply by counting the dots. The dots will not match up with the real password. Change the password, and ignore the dots that are then displayed. You should not assume the password did not 'take', - you should try the access. If it is allowed, then the password is OK.
Then, how can you tell what the password REALLY is? It works (and allows entry).
Why are the dots different in number from the characters in the password? This is additional security for you. Someone else cannot guess your password by counting the dots...
This is why you verify a change in the password by entering it twice.

Let me know how it goes...

Thanks for your prompt reply Dale.

Not sure if you read what I pasted below my explanantion-another person had an identical problem to mine-internet connection working fine but none of the apps recognize the server.

I did not have to enter the password twice to verify it. I am changing the password in the preferences>network>ppp>password field. The reason I counted the dots is because when I enter the new password, it changes to the correct amount of dots for the new password (14 characters) in the password field.

When I hit "apply now" the password field reverts to 8 dots (the amount of characters for the old password. I can see the dots switch from 14 to 8. The password field in the internet connect app stays at 14 dots, and I can connect, but none of my internet apps recognize the server.

Hope this clears things up...looking forward to your reply.

Thanks

My explanation still stands. in OS X, counting the number of dots does not tell you how many characters are in the password. If the dots are the same number as another password, it is just a coincidence. You can't depend on the number of dots that you see. The dots are just dots... All you can do is re-enter the Correct password, and click Apply Now. Ignore the Dots™
If you can't access the internet, then your password that you now have is incorrect.
Let me know how it goes...
