I get the error:
"unable to get printer status (Forbidden)!"
when trying to print from a MBP to an Epson Stylus Photo RX580 that is connected to a G5.
I used to print without problems, but now I get the above mentioned error. I am assuming this started after system updates, but am not positive since I did not notice it right away.
I've deleted the printer profile, and added the printer again.
I've tried a variety of printer drivers (5.1.3 and 6.01) on both machines but I get the error regardless. The G5 can print with ether driver, but the MBP can no longer print to this shared printer.

The two things to try are
1) repair permissions on both computers
2) reset the printing system on the computer that is telling you that it is forbidden.
If those two things don't work, turn off printer sharing on the computer hosting the printer and then turn it back on.
Take care

I am repairing permissions as I write this. I already tried turning sharing off and back on. How do I reset the printing system?
Don't know if this is related, but I had PC's printing to the same G5 using bonjour on the PC's. As soon as I upgraded to Leopard they stopped being able to print to the printer on this machine. At the time I was awaiting the arrival of the MBP within days so stopped troubleshooting in hopes that the MBP would help shed some light on the situation.
When the MBP arrived it printed fine, so it did not help sort the printing from the PC's.
Do you think this may be related?

Yes, more then likely they are....
Leopard changed the printing framework and Bonjor... They do not "advertise" the printer the same way.. But it should not give you a "forbidden" message
you can test your printing system on all you Mac OS X computer by opening safari and going to the following:
http://127.0.0.1:631/
This is the direct access to the CUPS printing system..
so let me make sure I have this right, the MBP, running Leopard prints fine but none of the other computers do?

The MBP was printing fine until about a week ago. I distinctly remember having a System Upgrade a few days before. I probably just did not print for a few days.
The PCs with Bonjour were printing until I installed Leopard in mid-November. By the third week of December, after unsuccessfully trying to troubleshoot, I called Apple. They had me test the printing system, but eventually we decided it would be easier to wait for the MBP to arrive a few days later.
When the MBP could print (this was a few days before Xmass, if it makes a difference) I figured it was not the printing system. I didn't do any testing at that time because I was able to print form the MBP. I figured it was all fine.
Now I can only print form the G5 that the printer is connected to, but NONE of the computers on the network.
Is that more clear now?
This IP address to the printing system: I need to run it form the G5, no?

Sorry for being late to reply.... Got tied up at work.
The address for the printing system is the same on all computers... You don't need to do that from the G5 since you know it prints fine.
Do it from each computer that cannot print. Something else to try is to connect the computer to the MBP and set it up to host the printer... Then see if all the other computers can print.
This will rule out (or prove) that the problem is with the G5 (don't think so) but its something to try thats quick and reveals alot.
