Hello,
I recommend using Disk Utility and run the "Repair Permissions" on your drive, this will most of the time solve the issues you are having.

Can you provide the exact error messages you are getting on these applications to where you can't install? If your open to it, I could setup a time to remotely control your system with your permission and observation to take a look.

How much RAM do you have on your computer? When you run the installer app, do you have any other applications running in the background: Word, web browser, etc? Have you updated your OS yet? If you have or haven't (really doesn't matter) go to the Apple Support website and download the latest COMBO update, then install.
By the way, what apps are you trying to update and install, and are you using the original install disks?

I am trying to install the latest updates from Apple ie. ITUNES, and other but I keep getting a message stating there there was a problem with the installation and to try again. I also tried to install FLIP4MAC last night and I got the same message.
