I recently bought an iMac and am using Tiscali as my ISP.
I have been trying without success to set up the router that they have sent me, which is a Siemens Gigaset SE587.
The instalation CD does not work. The Tiscali helpline told me to do the following:
Access the router settings pages using the IP address 192.168.1.1. Change the settings to PPPoA, enter my username and password. However, when I hit save settings I get the following message.
"safari casn't open page
http://192.168.1.1/pppoa_modify.htm/pppoa.modify the error was: 'lost network connection' (NSURLE Error Domain: - 1005).
The Tiscali helpline are being no help and have now told me to contact Apple, as basically they say it's not a problem their end. Any help would be much appreciated as I am computer illiterate and finding this increasingly frustrating.
Sarah,
I am helping someone with a similar issue.

Can you try connecting via FireFox? I'd like to know if that works for you.
Scott
Hi Scott thanks for your quick response yesterday.
The ethernet and airport are now showing as connected to Tiscali, but still no luck when attempting to save settings. I called Tiscali again last night and am now being told that it is a technical problem their end with the internet connection in the area. I queried this as it has been happening since Sunday and get the feeling it is just an easy answer to a problem they can't solve. I have absolutely no internet connection at home so am in difficulty attempting connection via Firefox.
Any other ideas? Will I experience the same problems if I try setting it up through another router? Is it a Siemens issue, or a Tiscali issue (because if it is I am seriously considering taking my business elsewhere).
Any help is much appreciated.
Sarah,
I am a bit confused by what the exact problem is. So, let me address it from a few different angles to cover a few bases.
1) Connecting to your Wireless Network
When you go in and setup your wireless connection, do you see your local network your trying to connect to in the list of available networks? If so, when you connect to it, does it make a successful connection to the wireless network or does it yell and scream at you that something is not right?
2) Your IP Address
If connected (in #1) what is the IP address your computer is assigned, you should see this in your Network Preferences Pane. Something like 192.168.1.xxx? If so, when you go
http://192.168.1.1 via your browser, does it pull up something? If it does, then you know that (a) your on your wireless network and (b) networking is setup properly.
3) Can You Reach the Internet?
If you go to
http://macosx.com, does the site come up? Well, we know your on your wireless network and you have connectivity to the local router, so either a) your default route (gateway) is incorrect, b) your DNS is not correct, or c) your router is not routing your traffic.
So, to test out (b) go to this URL:
http://74.86.137.250/
What happens? Does a error page load, like a 404 error? Or does it just spin and spin and not show anything? If it does load, then we narrowed it down to a DNS resolution issue and we need to setup your DNS correctly to the correct DNS server IP in your Network Settings. If you don't get a 404 error, then you need to check your IP Gateway address in network settings to see if it is the same as your router, ie, 192.168.1.1. If so... then the problem is with the gateway and it is not routing traffic and you will need help from your ISP to get that going.
