I keep receiving the following error message. "the device drained it's buffer without burn underrun protection" This is during a disk copy burn. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello :-)
My name is Carolyn and I will try to assist you.
First, if when you post here at Macosx.com, could you please indicate which Mac OS, RAM, and which Mac. Since you posted in to iLife Apps... are you burning to CD's or DVD's??
One thing that can cause that particular dialog box with the buffer burn underrun.... is not enough drive space on your Mac. Never try to burn a CD or DVD with less then 15% drive space available.
Also, please let me know exactly what you are trying to burn... images/music ???
Thanks,
Carolyn :-)
PS... Thanks for choosing Macosx.com.. get back to me with the information I need to further assist you..

Carolyn:
Thank you for your help. My apologies for not being more detailed. I am running OSX v10.3.5 on an iMac with 768 ram.
I am attempting to burn DVD's of dmg files that are completed DVDs created in iDVD using movies created in iMovie.
My primary drive is 56g with 13g available. I also have 2 external firewire drives that each have 128g. One is almost full, the other is only 10% full.
Thanks again,
Ron aka Soccerhead

HI Ron :-)
Ok, 10.3.5/iMac/768MB of RAM... one thing right off the bat.. upgrade to 10.3.9. Here's the link:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300966 System updates are critical help your iMac run stable. Little glitches such as you are experiencing can be fix themselves with a system update.
By any chance are these .dmg files on your external drives??? Rather than on your internal drive in the iMac??? If so, the external drive needs to be connected and the icon mounted on the Desktop in order for iDVD to burn correctly.
iDVD Tip: If you added an item to your project from a CD or DVD inserted into your computer's optical drive, the CD or DVD must be in the drive to provide access to the assets. If you eject the disc and try to burn the project, iDVD tries to locate the assets from the CD or DVD, but it can't find them. When adding items to a project, copy the items to your hard disk first, and then add them to your project so that they are always available.
To add an item from a CD or DVD to your iDVD project:
Copy the item to your hard disk first, and then add it to your project.
Make sure you have the latest iDVD update. Launch iDVD>Check for Updates. Latest version is 5.0.1. To verify which version you have now, launch iDVD, then click iDVD>Check for updates. Make sure you have an internet connection!
And if you haven't already done so, run Disk Utility. It's in your Applications folder. Launch Disk Utility... when the window opens select the Macintosh HD in the panel on the left side. Then click... Repair Permissions. Takes about a minute to run.
The fact that you only have 13GB left on the 56GB... that's cutting it kind of close. iDVD only recognizes the drive that the software is installed on, that being your iMac internal drive. So when you burn a DVD from iDVD on the iMac... if you can free up some space .... I know minimum is 15%... but go for 20% free space to burn.
Last time I was at the nearest Apple Store I was told to only use media that is DVD-R. Not +R... and I only use the Apple DVD's they sell there. I've tried several brands, but I come back to Apple's everytime.
OK.. when you created the .dmg files in iMovie, did you Export the file to iDVD directly? iDVD can ONLY burn data created by iMovie/iPhoto etc.
In case I'm not clear say I had a video from vacation I wanted to share with friends. I have to Import that file into iMovie, Save As the file, THEN Export to iDVD. If you are just dragging the .dmg file from a drive, or your Desktop to iDVD... that could be part of the problem. Create the entire file in iMovie>Export to iDVD.
Are you using an external burner??? Which iMac do you have? Is this a G5?? With a SuperDrive (internal DVD RW) ??
Tips for burning a DVD
With Mac OS X, you can burn DVDs and CDs directly from the Finder. Using this feature while iDVD is running is not recommended.
Let me know if anything I've suggested has helped.... if not, please post back.

Carolyn:
Thanks for your help. I will update for sure. I was trying to burn dmg files directly using disk copy from disk utility, not iDVD. I moved the dmg file to the start up drive hoping that would correct the situation, rather than having it on the external firewire drive. Still having issues with underrun.
Seperately, do you know if iDVD finished projects do not recognize files if you originally created them while they are on one drive but then later move them to another drive? It doesn't seem as if it should matter, but I am unable to create a dvd even though the project is finished.
Thanks

Hello!
iDVD "should" recognize a Project that has been Saved whether or not the assets are still on that drive or not. I've heard pro and con on this theory though. You might want to also post over at the Apple Discussion Boards. I discovered one post that reiterates the suggestion to try another media disk. This person had tried burning to a TDK but got the same underrun error you did. You definitely might try a different disk manufacturer. I've had luck with Sony also... always DVD-R not the +.
I also read a post at this url:
http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/sh...&Number=622725 << got the same errors on my new Pioneer DVR-107D DVDRW drive but found the firmware update for Mac's with OSX Panther 10.3.5 and this fixed the same problems. You might look to see if your drive has a firmware update for the OS your using>> So check to see if your Firmware is up to date!!!
One other thing I see suggested for this problem is to reinstall your Mac OS... but I would try upgrading first... to see if that solves the underrun problem. If not, Erase the disk and Reinstall.
I will keep searching for possible fixes for you... let me know how it's going!

Ooooops... I forgot to mention something. In Disk Utility when you click the New Image icon, you get a dialog box asking for Image Format and Encryption. What are you using ... read/write? or DVD/CD master ??? And unless someone else has access to these files... in the Encryption pop up menu click "none"...

Carolyn:
Thank you for your responses. I have been using TDK DVD's so I may try Apple or Sony. I will also update my software, how do you update your firmware?
Thanks
Ron

Happy New Year's Ron :-)
I called several Mac buddies today to ask what they used to burn DVD's and they said anything but TDK. Consensus of opinion is to start with Sony and see if you have luck with those.
As for the Firmware Update... click here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60385
That link should give you that information.
If your iMac has up to date Firmware and you've tried another media to burn to and you STILl can't burn to a DVD, post back and I'll go back to the drawing board for you.
Ron, I copy and pasted the following from a page at Apple:
Burning DVD±R and DVD±RW media with iLife '05 - compatible computers
iLife '05 applications support burning to DVD±R and ±RW discs when used with recent-model SuperDrives. This list will help you determine if your computer supports writing to these two media types.
All Macintosh computer models currently shipping with a SuperDrive support DVD±R/RW media with iLife '05. Additionally, the following systems will support burning to DVD±R/RW media with iLife '05 and Mac OS X 10.3 Panther:
All iMac G5 computers with a SuperDrive
Mac mini (configured with optional SuperDrive)
iMac (17-inch 1.25GHz Flat Panel)
iMac (20-inch 1.25GHz Flat Panel)
Is your iMac one of the two listed above??? I got this information from:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300665
Which iDVD version are you using????? Launch iDVD, then click iDVD>
About iDVD. A pane will open and tell you which version... either 04 or 05. Make sure you have your iDVD software updates too. To find out if you need updates... launch iDVD. Click iDVd>Check for Updates. Do this when you are online. Apple Computer will automatically advise if you need to update in the udpater window... if you have one available, just follow the instructions to download and install.
Ron you might also want to post over at Apple. Their Support/Discussion boards are a great place to ask and receive tech support also. Just go to
www.apple.com click the Support tab and then click Mac OS, then click for Panther. OR, click Software and then iDVD... lots of information there!
Post back... hopefully something will have solved the problem.
Regards,
Carolyn
