text in mail os x, some websites and in my address book displays as special characters and is unreadable - how can I get rid of it?

Did you remove or turn off any fonts?

Do you have the correct language selected in the International PreferencePane?

I'v checked languages and it's set to English.
I'm working as a designer and as such I have lots of fonts installed.
there are other machines on the network and this is the only one with issues?

Take a look at this Apple page and make sure all the fonts are in the correct folders;

Thanks so much for that link - We basically had a conflict with the Helvetica font in font book which I deleted and re-imported and all is well - you're a star!!
