Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Software
Computer Type: Adobe
Model: Adobe Type Reunion
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: Not related

Description:
Thank you NoWonder for being so eclectic! You really
are a lifesaver.
My problem is two-fold:
1) Every time i startup, there is a message indicating
that there are 2 copies of Adobe Type Reunion (ATR)
and i should get rid of one. Tried eliminating
what i could, but still get the same message....

The "get info" showed that there was ATR Deluxe in 'Controls' and in 'System' there was an ATR Folder with inside 'ATR Preferences'at 60K and 'ATR Names' at 300K. Maybe these are
the two?

A while ago i updated some software (and forgot i
updated ATR) and recently found that all my font
division categories were wiped out .. as in nowhere
to be found.

Now, could it be that the 300K 'names' are my missing
fonts ----- and the 60K 'preferences' is my update?
If so, how do i salvage my 300K information? I tried
to open the icon on my desktop but it told me the
"...application and translations are missing..."
Should i reload the former version and try to copy
the categories to the updated version? Or, is my only
recourse to recreate them.

2) Is it really necessary to hold onto all my software
boxes? I heard that sometimes when you purchase a
competitive/similar but different application (i.e.,
from Quark to Pagemaker) the new company allows you
to do so at the lower upgrade price if you send them
the box from your current application. Are you familiar
with this?
Thank you very much, Nechama Sarah

Nechama;
(1) You can try running the extensions manager (control panel) to see if you have duplicate files in your system folder. If you are running system 8.0 or higher, it will advise you as which to get rid of, or at least give you the version numbers of the duplicates. Additionally, you do a "Find" for ATM, it should show you all files that contain ATM, from there you can determine if there are duplicates by getting Info on each item from the "Find File" list.

(2) If you have registered your software, and still have a proof of purchase. I see no reason to keep the pretty boxes that your software shipped in. You can make some nice murals/posters out of them. I have never heard of anyone offering a discount from software containers. Although Apple did offer a reduced upgrade price from OS 7.6 to Mac OS 8.0 with a photo copy of the 7.6 cd-rom, or the back cover of the your original trouble shooting guide. Perhaps thats where this rumor got its start.
Best wishes, I hope was helpful, and I enjoyed your posting...
