Hi,
I've just done the standard PPC upgrade to 10.4.6 on my G5 and have lost bluetooth. Toolbar and set-up utility all say no module installed but I have been using the internal module since this little beauty arrived.
Can anyone point towards a solution ?
I did do a full back up but not at all sure how to downgrade - is it as simple as duping back from the external drive ?
Thx

Hi and welcome to macosx.com
Just install the 10.4.6 Combo 2 hours ago
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...mboforppc.html
(because I jump from 10.4.4) and no problem: BT is there and working
Could you try to re-install this combo over your existing 10.4.6 ?
Repair permissions before and after install

Philippe

Could you try the following basic maintenance tips.
(1) repair permissions
Launch Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility
On the left pane, select the drive
On the right, select the First Aid (or SOS) tab
Then click on repair permissions and let run; don not worry about messages like " new permissions...."
Quit DiskUtility
Shutdown and reboot
(2) Macjanitor
Download macjanitor
http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_...acjanitor.html
and launch the 3 scripts (these scripts are Unix scripts ran by the OS at 4am to maintain the Unix core)

Already did those - this is much more fundamental than permissions or rotating some logs and clearing out caches. The upgrade is not recognising the presense of any blue tooth module. I am wondering whether to use the scary BT firmware updater.
Any ideas on downgrade paths ?

BT does not appear in System Profiler Hardware »» Bluetooth. &/or. ?
-> Remove potentially corrupted Bluetooth preference file:
Turn Bluetooth off - go to /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences - trash file named: "com.apple.Bluetooth.plist"
Restart and turn Bluetooth on, then re-pair permissions
-> have a look to this Apple KB article
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300429
and

Yes, you can use the Restore facility of DiskUtility to clone back from the external drive.

Phillipe - you are the man !
I dont know who you are, where you are or why you do this for free but I am VERY grateful.
Removing pref file did nothing - didn't even re-create it !
Had a look at the article (how long would it have taken me to find that ?) and realised that I had left the backup drive connected by firewire and the printer by USB (it's so 'always there' that it didn't occur to me to remove it). Disconnected - shut down -removed power cord - waited 60 seconds - restarted with a heavy heart and joy of joys ! My BT module has re-materialised.
Thanks for expertise and also for incredible speed of response - bet Apple wish their teckies were this good - where do I donate ?
seriously grateful steve

Happy we both find a solution to the ticket.
To answer your questions, I work freely on this helpdesk because I think it is important to give a free help as I was helped in the past when I start using Mac: all mac users do not have the time/money to run to the Genius bar each time a problem occurs.
Moreover, on the contrary to Windows, Mac Os is shown by Apple as a transparent, fluid, powerfull, "nothing to do" stuff. Marketing focuses people's attention on iLife, iTunes, iDo-What-I-Want... but when a problem occurs, most of the people does not know how to react because they do not imagine that "this" can occur on Apple OS
I'm a Unix/Windows software engineer working in a technical helpdesk in Belgium. Since years, I learned that obvious things for me are not so obvious for other. I still continue learning when I try to help others and I love learning !
About donate, on the main page of the macosx site, there is a store where you can buy stuff(tee-shirt,...) which help Scott, the foundator of the site, to maintain the tools.
But, well, you're not obliged at all: the best thing you can do is simply speaking about us around you.
Enjoy your Mac.
I would say "Hope you'll come back to see us", but when someone calls a helpdesk, it is not for fun ;-)
Regards from a rainy Belgium
