Hi,
I know i asked a rather stupid question a while ago on the same topic, but this one, i think, is a more intellegent question.

i have 10.3.5, and want to keep my software up to date. My mac has no connection to the internet, but i can download the updates and then copy them onto my mac. On the net, there are updates that allow me to udate to 10.3.9... Do i need to update in steps, ie, update to 10.3.6 then 10.3.7, then 10.3.8 etc, or can i just download the 10.3.9 update and leave out all the others.
The files are rather large, and i have limited bandwidth, so i cant download it to see if it will work, i want to only download it if i know it work.
Please help.

Thank You,

Timothy

Hi Timothy,

Yes, you can jump from 10.3.5 to 10.3.9, you can even jump from 10.3.0 to 10.3.9. You need to then install the combo-update to 10.3.9, that then automatically installs 10.3.6, 7, and 8. Actually, I would always install the Combo update, instead of the normal one. Its always better. Also if youre going from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9 . It is more thorough.
Hope this helps,

Ferdinand

ok - lets see how the download goes...

I know this has nothing to do with MacOSX.com, but why are you actually in South Africa? Do you come from there? Or just visiting, or are you working there? I would once like to go there... but I heard its really horribly hot, so I am not so sure anymore.

South africa is a really leka country. There arent elephants and stuff roaming the streets like most overseas people think. At the moment, its rather cold, and although it gets rather hot sometimes, it is always barable(excuse my spelling). I'm only 16, my dad is Lebanese, from lebanon, and my mom was born and bread here in south africa. They got married in Lebanon, but decided to move here when my brother was born in the war.
I have yet to meet someone who has visited south africa and not liked it.

i downloaded the update last night, and installed it in the early hours of this moring, it took a while, but its working without any problems, however i really havent noticed any difference.
I also downloaded Open Office, seeing as i really cant affor microsoft office. It took extremely long, and all i got out of it was a pathetic little word processing application. Maybe it's just me, but i thought it would be a suit. Anyway, i cant stand using it, everytime i need it, i have to mount the image, then click on the icon, then wait for awhile. it uses X11 (or something like that). Are there any other free application that could take the place of microsoft office (i.e. excel, word, publisher, powerpoint etc)?

Ya, I also thought there are Elefants in SA... A friend of mine comes from SA, I think its called Capetown.

Ok, so back to the question.
So, yes a really great Application Suite is Neo-Office, you can download it at this links:

If you have a PowerPC Mac:
(iBook PowerBook, iMac G5 and older, eMac, PowerMac)

http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/..._4-PowerPC.dmg

If you have an Intel Mac:
(MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini)

http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/...ha_4-Intel.dmg

Lets see how this goes,

dont get me wrong, there are lots of elephants, but only in the wild, they dont roam the city streets.
I found out how to get to the other applications of open office, but still, open office is raugh around the edges if you know what i mean, maybe i'm just used to ms office.
I will try download neo office.
Its true, it is called capetown, and its an amazing place, but the weather there is well,, leaves much to be desired

do i need to have open office installed, or can i delete that and still use neoOffice. it says neoOffice is based on openoffice, so i dont know

That just means that uses the same concept, so no, you dont need OpenOffice installed, you can just delete it.

after hours of downloading, and leaving a great dent in my bandwidth, Neo-Office was finally sitting on my windows pc. i copied it, using a flash drive, to the mac, and installed it without a hitch.
However running it was a different story. I thought that openoffice was rough around the edges. With neoOffice, none of the drop down menus work (i.e. fonts etc). All the little icons, (like the paint brush etc) come up as black squares. Also, it is extremely slow. Am i missing something, did i make a mistake somewhere?

That really puzzles me - I had it for sometime and it worked great.
hmm....
What should we do now? Erase and we'll have to find something else? Erase it and just by Microsoft Office? Back to OpenOffice? Your choice...

Why does everything microsoft have to be so expensive... Maybe i should unistall it, and then install it again.

Good idea - just delete and re-install. Maybe something went wrong. Do you have limited gigs of download? If not, then re-download it aswell, as the download might have gone bad instead.

i will try uninstall it and start fresh. If that doesn't work, i will have to download it again, but for that i will have to wait for the end of the month, if i download now, i will be in tonnes of trouble.
