I have an iMac g3 350 mhz, running OS 10.1. very old, and the internal cd drive is dead.

the only web browser installed is IE 5 and it is unable to download software updates; I have tried from several sites including tucows and apple.com. I can't even get safari or any other web browser that is more current that would work.

I believe at this point that I must reformat the drive and reinstall the software; that is something I need to do regardless. Without a working internal cd drive, I am unsure of the best way to go about this.

I have installation discs and also a PowerBook. I do not have wireless networking capability on the older model. I also have an external DVD RW drive.

What is the most efficient way to access and reformat and reinstall from an external source?

Most of page downloads, but the next link to actually start the download never appears within the page.

On a few other occasions, have been able to download very small files, click through a similar process. Cant complete on download of safari or apple system software update.

Hi Gary,

OS 10.1 isn't really worth using, I think, as there's no current software for it and it was quickly replaced with later versions for good reasons. Any chance you have or can get 10.2 or 10.3 disks to install on this machine?

Also 256 RAM is not much at all when it comes to OS X.

Is this the iMac 350 with firewire or without?

I think the disks I have are 10.3. I was able to successfully download the latest update - 10.5, but when trying to open the attached was told there was an error mounting the image.

I'm not even sure if it is 256, it could be 128, I added an extra RAM card when I bought it, whatever the maximum possible at that time was; somewhere around the year 2000.

I have an external DVD RW that I may be able to use to run the install disks that I have.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you so much.

10.3 (Panther) will only update through 10.3.x - I think it's 10.3.9 if memory serves. 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) are separate OS's that you would have to purchase if you do not already own them. I don't believe 10.4 or 10.5 would be supported (or run well) on your iMac.

128 will definitely not provide enough RAM to make OS X happy at all.

Do you have firewire on that iMac? If so and if you have firewire on your external DVD, you can boot from the install disk that way. If it's USB it will not boot from that. Some 350s had firewire and some did not. Firewire would be 2 ports that are rectangular except for one end of the rectangle being tapered.
