How would I go about upgrading the processor on this machine? What the board can take.
Can it be done simply without paste?
Any recommendations on where to buy a processor?

Hi Allen
This site has all the upgrades available;
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/accelerators/
Install instructions come with any of them.

What about my other questions?
Which one do you recommend?
How do I identify my Mac and what it can take?
bobw - Oct 12, 2005 - 9:20 am
Allen
No paste is needed. The processor just screws to the Logic Board.
If your G4 is a 400MHz Desktop model, it can be one of these three;
G4/400/PCI
G4/400/AGP
G4/400/Gigabit Ethernet
Open the System Profiler in your Utility folder. Under Hardware, it will show the model.
My choice, if it's either the AGP or Gigabit Ethernet model would be;
OWC Mercury Extreme G4/1.467-1.5GHz 2MB L3 Cache for PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth, Gigabit Ethernet
If it's the PCI (Yikes) model, this would be my choice;
Sonnet Encore/ZIF G4/1GHz w/1024k 4:1 Backside Cache. Compatible with PowerMac G3 Beige, G3 Blue&White, G4 'Yikes' PCI Models.

For some reason now, when I use my Tiger CD 1 to install, it quits and says the install had an error and need to restart.
Any ideas why it would do that?

Allen
Did you have a version of OS X on this machine already?
Are the Tiger discs retail discs, or copies from somewhere?

It must have had a scratch on it because when I copied it, it worked fine.

That's a little out of my price range. Is there one under 200 that you recommend?
bobw - May 20, 2006 - 11:03 am
Allen
There's a few close to $200.00,
Go to this page;

Select your model and continue.
Anything this company sells is good. It's a very good company to deal with.

If that processor is the one that will work in your PowerMac, and the price is agreeable to you, then you should try it. Macsales.com (OWC) has very good tech support, and you could try calling them if you have questions about the products that they sell.

It does fit in my 400mhz and the price is good. I was just wondering if you heard anything about it.
