A friend has my old beige G3 box operating OS9.2. He is getting increasingly frustrated that things like airline sites no longer support 9 and is thinking of upgrading. He is not short of a dollar but doesn't like spending one.
I suggested that, as he has a monitor and keyboard, a MacMini could be the way to go.

He is now thinking of an Intel iMac, which, when you amortise the extra cost over its life, makes sense to me.

But he is worried that his files wouldn't migrate to Intel. (He uses mainly Microsoft Office 2001.)

As he (and you!) know, I am a user, not a techo, I advised him there wouldn't be a prob, especially if he downloaded NeoOffice and brought the files into that to convert. I explained many apps are non-platform specific, such as Adobe Reader.
But I lack the confidence in offering him solid advice.

Would he be OK with his old files from 9.2 to Tiger on Intel?

Thanks yet again

Howdy!

Unfortunately, he will not be able to use his 9.2 files on the Intel machine as OS X no longer supports Classic/OS 9.

If he's short a dollar or two he most certainly can't afford the new Intel machines, but could afford a used laptop or G5 tower. Does your friend need an expandable computer or one that he can set and forget (ie. he doesn't need more and more RAM and or processing power regularly). That will determine what kind of computer he gets next.

You can directly import Microsoft Office files to the new machine you get as well.

I really appreciate your advice - as I am sure he will. Thank you!
