I am trying to upgrade an iMac that meets the minimum specs for upgrade to OS 10.3.9

When I try to run the install CD, I proceed through the normal installation steps and when I get to a screen that asks me to select a destination I do not see the computer's hard drive.

I can't get the computer to boot into target mode either like the hard drive has disappeared.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

SS

How far did you get with your OS Installation? and did you format the drive before doing the installation?

If you did erase the drive and did not manage to complete the installation then you will not be able to access the drive in target mode as it may still be blank.

If you can, insert the Mac OSX Installer CD # 1, MAKE SURE IT IS A CD not a DVD or if it is a DVD that your IMac has a DVD reader.

Then restart your Mac holding down the C key until it boots on the CD, if it does not boot on the CD, then it is possible the CD is faulty, or that your IMac will not support that particular version of Mac OS X. In which case you will get a message to that effect.

Apple does have a list of compatible systems and it sounds like you have checked that your Imac is covered.

Keep the C key held down until you boot up on the Install CD.

Once you do, go to the Drive utility instead of just following the installer. It is available either under the Apple Menu or the Install Menu.

Open that and see if you drive is listed there. IF it is not, go to the Format or erase tab and see if your drive is listed there. If it is not then there may be a problem with the drive itself.

PLEASE NOTE If you have any data at all on your HD that you are aware of that you need, go no further, because the next step is to erase the HD and possibly partition it. This will destroy any data existing on your HD, all of it.

As long as this is OK with you and you can access your drive, then go ahead and erase it. Setting it up for OS X Iwould put journaling on for safety, and if you might need OS 9 install those drivers as well.
Then go ahead and install the OSX.

Let me know how far you get with this will you and if it fails, any error messages you get

Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately, it would see the HD within the disk utility to be able to format or erase it.

I ended up swapping out the HD for another one.

Thanks for taking time for me.
