i want to upgrade my cube from 10.2.8 to 10.3. my 20g hard drive is partitioned and the os x partition has about 2.6g. i have tried to install 10.3 to it and get a massage that there is not enough space. i have tried a bare bones install with no luck. i still need to free up about 500mb of space. i have a free partition of about 3g i could use but i want all my settings to migrate when i upgrade. three questions:
1.if i install 10.3 to the free partition how do i move my settings over from the 10.2.8 partition?
2.is there a partitioning tool for use in os 10.2 that would allow me to add to the 10.2 partition thereby creating more space?
3.when i try to copy something from my 10.2 partition to another partition to make room i get a message that i don't have the right permissions to copy some of the items but do i want to continue anyway?. how can i copy items to another partition so i can delete them and make room for my 10.3 install?

What you're trying to do can pose a lot of problems. The easier solution would be to get a bigger hard drive, don't you think? Your technical level is "Lots of experience" and even a klutz like me has upgraded the hard drives on my two cubes more than once. I would then put your current HD in an external case, connect it by FW to the Cube, install 10.3 on the new drive and then copy over anything you need from the old drive. Before taking the old hard drive out though, I would back up irreplaceable files to another drive or CD or flash drive, or whatever you use as your backup media.

Hope that helps and please let us know what happens. Thanks.

ishan,
thanks, you are probably correct. i have changed out hard drives on several powerbooks in os 9 so i know the drill. my problem is with saving all my old settings in osx.in os 9 i know where everything is and the names make sense to me so i can drag it from the backup to the new hard drive. os x has me baffled. i can't tell what files my various settings are in so without the installer to save and transfer the settings for me i am lost. jack

In OS 10.x, all your own settings (preferences, etc.) are in the Users folder, under your user name. So all you need to do is back this folder up. If you then install a fresh copy of 10.x on an empty hard drive, you will have to create a default user when you reboot and go through the minimal configuration process. After you've done that, and can use 10.x on the new hard drive, copy over your entire users folder and reboot. You can then reboot and delete the temporary user you created (if you like) and you should be have an identical system.

Alternatively, use SuperDuper or CCC to make a bootable clone of your old drive onto your new drive, then do a fresh install of 10.x with the Archive, preserve user settings and prefs option checked. That will work as well.

Good luck.

Forgot to add...if you've changed out drives in the older PBs, changing out a hard drive in the Cube is something you can do with your eyes closed

I've replaced the drives, processor and graphics card on a few Cubes and there's superb guides availabel (macsales.com for one) on how to do this if you need the help...although I doubt you do.
