Joel,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. I do have a few questions. What version are you trying to update to? Have you used Disk Utility from the OS X CD to repair the drive?

Start up with the OS X CD (matching the version you are running)(insert CD, restart computer, immediately hold down the c key) and do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer menu and select Disk utility.
When that opens click on the second icon in the side bar at the left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.

Now click on Repair Permissions.

When that is done, quit Disk utility and restart the computer.

With 10.2.1 the only upgrade you can do is the 10.2.8 combo from here:

i have followed your instructions and repaired the disk from start up
however, it has not rectified the problem of the computer freezing when i try to install 10.2.8
upon, first try though, i had managed to start installing only for it to cancel saying "there was an error in the disk"

Joel,

How much room do you have available on your hard drive and how large is the hard drive? To find this, just open a window and look at the bottom of the window. It will show you how many items and how much available space there is on the drive itself.

This is important, as if there is not enough room for the installer to work, it will behave strangely.

Did Disk Utility find any errors to repair?
You may need a third party disk utility to check over the drive.
Tech Tool Pro - http://www.micromat.com/tt_pro_4/tt_pro_4.html
I use Disk Warrior - http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html

You can buy it on line or at a store that sells Apple computers and software.

Once you have the CD, start up the computer with it (insert CD, restart computer, immediately hold down C key). Then have it repair all that it finds.

Let it do the tests at least twice. If it does any repairs - have it run again until all is okay.

If Disk Warrior can not repair the hard drive, then it is time to back up all your files, use the OS X cd and erase the drive, reformat it (using Mac OS Extended) and install the OS.

Joel,

Do not install Tech Tool Pro. Instead use the CD to start up the computer and allow it to check the hard drive and repair all the problems it finds (insert CD, restart computer, immediately hold down the c key).

Starting from the TechTool Pro 4 CD-ROM is much slower than from the hard drive. It may take as long as ten minutes. Be sure you wait that long. If the computer does not start up in that case, try disconnecting any third party peripherals to make the computer as stock as possible. This includes third party USB/FireWire hubs, cable modems, etc.

When booting from the TechTool Pro 4 CD the program will automatically launch. When you quit TechTool Pro 4 the computer will automatically restart.

Do not use the optimization tool at this point.

Keep me posted on how you do.
