Hello, I have the old blue Power Mac G3, OS 8.6. I'm trying to upgrade the OS to 9.0 and got the update off of Apple's web site but it won't work - when it asks where I would like to install, everything is grayed out. How can I fix this or can I purchase a full version 9.0 somewhere? I've done searches on google and get nothing. I guess it's so damn old, no one carries it anymore. I'm poor and can't afford a new computer so I'm stuck with this one for a while.

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Holly,

I'm still running 8.6 on my old iMac so your post immediately caught my eye.
One thing to remember when upgrading to a newer OS is memory. If I remember correctly your Mac came with 32MB installed. You would need a minimum of 64MB of RAM to run 9.0, otherwise it will just crash and freeze every time you boot it up. To see how much memory you have, go to the Apple icon top left of your screen and click, About This Mac. When the window opens it should indicate Built In Memory.

Also, your processor is probably a 233Mhz or slightly faster and your hard drive space is only 4GB. If you upgrade to 9.0, the system will run very very slow.

My suggestion at this point is this. If you can find a local Apple Store, you could probably get a 9.0 disk there and RAM if you need it. Also, if you have a CompUSA, they might be able to assist you also.

I wish I could wave my magic Mac wand and make this easier but the fact is, computers don't last forever. I upgraded to a PBookG4 because my iMac G3 is just plain worn out. I upped the memory to 512mb and it runs, but even with that it runs at a snails pace. I still use it for hard drive space.

Post back and let me know if you have an Apple Store anywhere near you. If you aren't sure go here: http://www.apple.com/retail/ That will show you a list of all the locations around the country.

Hang in there!
Carolyn :-)

Hi Carolyn, I checked my memory and I have 128 MB of built in so I'm okay in that area. I do have an Apple store in my mall so I will stop in the next time I go. I know it's time for a new computer but I'm waiting until they install the Intel processors. I'm currently taking a Flash class and would like to be able to work at home so that's why I need to upgrade my OS so I can run Flash. Thanks so much for your help - I should have kept up on my upgrades!

Hi Holly,

I understand the upgrade then to use Flash!! Not an easy application to learn, my hat's off to you.

128MB of RAM is good, but more is better for stability... especially running animations in Flash.

I'm looking forward to the "Xtels" also... so completely understand!

You are so welcome... and come back if you need further assistance.
Carolyn :-)

Hi Carolyn, I was able to finally install 9.1 and installed Flash MX successfully but can't open the program - I get this bizarre error message that says "DragLib -- SetDragImageWithAlpha could not be found". Do you know what this is?

Thanks again for all your help!

HI Holly,

Ok... you've installed 9.1 and installed FlashMX but can't open the progam.

I Googled for the library file you mentioned... and got this hit:

http://forums.dealmac.com/read.php?1,737810

By any chance are there two system folders on the drive now? That could be what's keeping FlashMX from launching.

Run Disk Utility... see if that makes any difference. Also, have you tried the forums at Macromedia? I've had success troubleshooting Fireworks/Dreamweaver before!

One more thought, is your FlashMX install a CD? If so, you might try downloading a new file for it and see if that makes a difference. I saw that 9.1 is supported for Mac.

http://www.macromedia.com/support/contact/ <--- for either e-mail/online support or their customer service number:
800-470-7211 (toll free).

I'd try Macromedia support at this point. Since they support 9.1 for Mac they certainly and you've purchased FlashMX, they should be able to help you.

Let me know if you get it going!
Carolyn :-)
