i have a g5 imac with 512 ram, 64mb graphics card, 1.8mhz processor. i just bought doom3, and even on low quality its jerky and slow. can i upgrade my graphics card or ram?
Yes and No. The RAM can be increased. You can go up to 2 GB of memory installed.
The VRAM cannot be upgraded without replacing your iMac. It's on the logic board, and can't be modified. Doom3 recommends 128 MB VRAM. The only way to get there on your system - replace with a newer iMac G5 with 128 MB.
Have you downloaded the update 1.3 at the Doom support page?

There's also a link to a support site that has a lot of info about optimizing your system, and the configuration settings inside D3 for best performance.

The OS X and any apps that you use will have more memory.
You will probably get more stability from your system, and certain apps may run more smoothly. Your game has a minimum requirement of 512MB RAM, so having more than the minimum is a Good Thing™.
There is no downside, or disadvantage to adding more memory, other than the expense.
You can use DDR PC3200 memory in your iMac, and is very simple to install.
