Try the following:

Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.

If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Open System Profiler and look for the Macintosh Model ID. If it is 3,2 or 3,3, then it requires a firmware update. The firmware update required is different depending upon which of these two models you have.

Where did you get the Tiger installer? What version of Disk Warrior? Which model TiPB? Size of hard drive and amount of free space? How much RAM installed?

You may need to free up some additional disk space to install Tiger. You need at least 4 GBs of free space over and above what you have now during installation.

I'm concerned, however, that you cannot boot DW. Just to be sure, you are doing the following?

1. Insert DW CD in optical drive.
2. Restart computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until computer starts up from the CD.

Is this what you are doing?

To find out what model you have open System Profiler. Look for the Macintosh Model ID. It will be two numbers like this: 3,n. What's the second number?

You need to tell me exactly which TiPB model you have. Again, use System Profiler and report to me the machine ID number. It should be a line like this:

Machine Model: PowerMac 3,5.

I need to know the two numbers.

That's not the right info. The info I want is not a version number. The information is reported as I said: two single digit numbers separated by a comma, e.g., 3,4.

If you still can't find that then tell me as much about the model as possible: CPU speed, Processor model (7450 or 7455), bus speed (100 or 133 Mhz), manufacture date.

In that case I suggest you do the following:

A. Make a bootable backup of your current system to an external Firewire drive. You can download and use Carbon Copy Cloner to make the clone (www.versiontracker.com.) Be sure to open CCC preferences and be sure the box "Make bootable" is checked. Erase the external drive before making the clone.

B. Do the following:

1. Boot from Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities.

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.

4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.

6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed to install Tiger.

Perhaps your boyfriend can do it for you. I wish there were an easier solution, but given what you've done (quite a bit, by the way) I can only surmise at this point that the existing system is corrupted in some way preventing Tiger from installing.

Out of curiosity when you've tried the Tiger installation were you using the Upgrade install? If so, before going to the extreme of erasing the drive, try instead to do an Archive and Install: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120. Boot the Tiger DVD and when you get to the point of selecting the target hard drive select your hard drive, then click on the Options button. In the dialog check the radio button for Archive and Install, then click on OK. Now continue the installation.
