I copied the orginal home folder to a new user then deleted the original home folder. Seems some stuff got corrupted, keychain, safari info etc. So i downloaded the macs osx 10.4.9 upgrade, hoping it would smooth out any corruptions, when i get to the part of the upgrade install that says" select volume" there are no volumes listed, and i cannot proceed with the install, please let me know how to reslove this so i may continue on with the upgrade.

thanks michael

Michael,

Just copying an important folder to another location does not include the invisible files that are needed, as you have found out. Did you empty the trash or is the original home folder still in the trash? If it is still there, you can put it back where it belongs and log into that user.

If the folder is not in the trash, you maybe able to rescue those original files using DataRescue

The longer you use the computer before trying to retrieve the data will make the rescue even harder and may not be fruitful. In that case, you would need to delete those troubled files and start fresh.

Using the OS update does not help fix corrupt files. You can try using Disk Warrior to fix those files.

When you want to copy important folders from the hard drive, use CarbonCopy Cloner or SuperDuper. Both are excellent utilities to have.

I should be able to get the OSX disk and reintall the operating system software right? Just start fresh and reinstall everything. There isnt any data needed to be saved from the old profile. So starting fresh seems to be the best way. Is that correct?

Michael,

Yes, you are correct. Insert the 10.4 CD/DVD and restart the computer holding down the C key.
Once it has started with the OS X disk, you will need to select your language.
Now do not click on the installer screen. Instead, go to the Tools/Utilities menu and select Disk Utility.

When that opens, click on the first icon in the side bar at the left.
Now click on the erase tab.
Here you can name the hard drive and you should select HFS Extended as the format.
Click on Erase. You will get a warning that this will totally erase the drive. Click on Erase.

When it is done, click on the First Aid tab and have it repair the drive. You should see no repairs needed.

Now quit Disk Utility and go ahead and install the OS.

Once done and restart the computer, you will be prompted to create a user name, password and internet connection.

When you are done, you want to use System Preferences (light switch in the dock) to select Software Update. You need to update the OS getting the 10.4.9 combo update as well as the security updates.

Once that is done and you have restarted, go back to Software Update to make sure you have all the updates. Now you need to go to Utilities>Disk Utility to repair permissions from the First Aid tab.

You are then all set to work.
