TICKET ARCHIVE -> User Settings Have Disappeared. I Can See the Stuff But I Can't Access It.

I have an iBook G4, running Mac OS X 10.4.3
This morning the computer started being "funny" asking for passwords for Skype, Entourage, gmail etc, which it never does (not in the last 5 months).Later in the day, I opened iTunes and the library was empty; no songs, no playlists. Something similar happened with iPhoto: No photos, no albums, no slideshows. Entourage is also empty: no mails, no projects,(with the corresponding mails, files, notes, etc,) tasks, notes, are also gone. Address Book is also empty (bar my name and Apple's contact details). My desktop is clear, except for the Macintosh HD drive. The widgets have dissapeared. The dashboard doesn't have the programs I've put there any longer.
Using spotlight, I'm able to see the files and have been able to repopulate iTunes and iPhoto. However a) all changes I made to songs (ratings, comments, etc) or photos (rotate, change colors, resize, crop, etc) are gone. These files seem to have never been manipulated by me and b) Although I can see the card of my contacts using spotlight, I haven't been able to open these cards.(ie if I put "Juan" in spotlight one of teh results is a contact called Juan, but if I click to open it, it doesn't work.
Also using spotlight, I've discovered that there seems to be two parallel me using this laptop (I'm the only user. I leva alone, work alone, so there's no chance somebody created another user). If I put the name of a file that I'm certain was in the old Desktop (the one full of files, icons, aliases) and then ctrl click that file to "Reveal Finder" a new Finder window opens, and that window has the old desktop, but I don't know how to re-teach the laptop that that's the desktop it should be using (instead of the desktop that only has the HD).
I've checket the Hard Drive using Disk Utilty, and couldn't find any problem.
Knowing that all the information is here, how can I get it back to how it was (pictures without red eyes, songs with reatings, address book with contacts, dektop with files)?
Any idea why did this happen?
Thanks!

I don't know why this happened, but the first thing I'd suggest is to look in your Accounts prefpane and specifically on the left hand side. How many users do you see and if there's more than one, are they both adminstrator? Assuming that you can click on the lock to unlock the preferences, is there a way to figure out (assuming there are two users) which one is the real you?. If there is, change the login options so you get a list of users at login and pick the "real" you as the user. You should get your own desktop and all the files you know are will be back and accessible in the right places. Also repair permissions with Disk Utility, perhaps before you do what I suggested above. HTH and please let us know what happens.

I repaired the permissions using Disk Utility as you suggested.

Any other idea?

First, just ignore all the changes in permissions for Widgets. The important lines are:
Group differs on ./private/etc/authorization, should be 80, group is 0
Owner and group corrected on ./private/etc/authorization
If you haven't repaired permissions again, do so; you'll still get all the widget-related stuff but that's OK. Also, startup from the CD/DVD that came with your computer and repair the disk (not repair disk permissions) using Disk Utility. If you have Diskwarrior (from Alsoft, the best $79 I ever spent, BTW), run that as well; DW comes with its own bootable CD and the latest version is 3.0.3.
Another option (before doing all the stuff above) is do download the combo 10.4.3 installer (about 97 Mb) from Apple's downloads page and run it, even though you're running 10.4.3 already. For some reason, this often fixes these weird problems and it does not harm. I would do that first at this point before doing all the rest.
Plese give us some follow up as to how things go. Thanks.
Bochica - Nov 18, 2005 - 8:56 pm
I've downloaded and run the Mac OS X 10.4.3 combo, and the laptop remains unchanged (ie, completely changed).
Also tried fixing the permissions using Disk Utility with no result.
I tried the Disk Warrior last night and got this report:
DiskWarrior has successfully built a new optimized directory for the disk named "Macintosh HD." The new directory is
ready to replace the original directory.
Notes:
All file and folder data was easily located.
Optimizing the Catalog Tree Directory File has increased available disk space.
Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicates that there will be changes to the number, the
contents and/or the attributes of the files and folders. It is recommended that you preview the replacement
directory and examine the items listed below. All files and folders were compared and a total of 8,303,728
comparison tests were performed.
• Errors, if any, in the directory structure such as tree depth, header node, map nodes, node size, node counts, node
links, indexes and more have been repaired.

Explanations:
Custom Icon Flag: Every folder has a flag that indicates whether or not it has a custom icon. Repairs ensure that the
icons of these folders will be properly displayed.
Text Encoding: File and folder names are stored in Unicode characters. The text encoding value indicates the method
used to convert the file name to Unicode. Repairs prevent the name from being displayed incorrectly.
Volume Information: Every disk has information that describes its contents. Repairs prevent problems such as wasted disk space and applications not functioning properly.

I think I forgot to mention earlier that all the folders I created in "Documents" since I got my laptop are gone to this "parallel" dimension that exists in my computer. So, if I want to open my dissertation I can't do so from Word, for example. I have to go to spotlight, look for the folder or file I want to open and open it from there. Only spotlight has access to the stuff. And not even to all the stuff. The contacts in the address book remain unopenable.
Thanks a lot for all your help.

I'm running out of ideas, so I think I'll return this question to the pool for some folks with better insight to ponder. Sorry and thanks for your patience.

Is it possible that your hard drive is almost completely filled? How much free space is available on your drive?
If you have plenty of space on your drive (more than 25% free), then:
It sounds like you may still have ownership/permissions problems.
You should note that permissions repair does NOT descend into your home directory, so any permissions problems you encounter there will not be fixed by repairing permissions. The easiest way to fix all that is to make sure you own everything in your home directory: Type this command in the terminal window.
sudo chown -R username /Users/username
change username to your actual user account name. Be careful of spaces and capitalization : -R is not the same command as -r
Press enter, then type your admin password when asked, and press enter again.
When you get the prompt back, Logout, then log back in, or simply restart.
Let me know how it goes...

Hi,
I've checked the free space and I have 28.76 GB available. I also tried typing the command you suggested in Terminal, and nothing changed.
But I have discovered something, which I have not noticed before. Using spotlight, I have noticed that the path to the files in the old me, and the new me are different. For instance, in the old me, the pictures I've taken are in the Path '/susanavelez/pictures' whereas in the new me, they are in the path 'user/susanavelez/pictures'. Of course of the files I can only find using spotlight are in the old path ('susanavelez/' without the '/users/' before). I don't know if that's meaningless.
Thanks a lot to all of you for being so nice and patient.

That does explain your situation.
You have moved your user folder out of the Users folder to the root of your hard drive. when you restart after doing that, your system will create a new user folder with the same name, but in the /Users folder, where it should be, and everything is reset to defaults. You SHOULD be able to move the susanavelez folder from the /Users folder to your desktop, then move the susanavelez from the root of your hard drive back to the /Users folder, then logout and log back in, and all should be fixed (I think). You will probably have to run that same chown command from the terminal after changing the account folder back to its proper location.
