Hello,

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to use iChat at work. I'm sure it has something to do with Ports and Firewalls, but I don't really understand all that stuff. I was able to use my Yahoo Messenger by just clicking a button under Preferences -> Connection and then "Behind Firewall."

Is there something I can do to use my iChat??

Thank you in advance for your time in reading this,

Lisa Handley

Hi Lisa,

My name is Vinko and I will attempt to assist you.

From the sound of it, your corporate network has many of its ports closed off for security reasons.

In the case of Yahoo IM you may want to try using the IM client "Adium" instead of Yahoo Messenger client.

One of the advantage of this IM client, Adium, is that it enables you to consolidate all your IM accounts from Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, GTalk, Jabber, .Mac (iChat), etc. into one client application.

As for iChat, if you want to enable its use over the Internet to other Macintosh there are many ports that needs to be opened.

If you want to use iChat within your corporate network with other Macintosh then there are a separate set of ports.

Details of what these ports are for is described in Apple's Technical Arcticle "Using iChat AV with a firewall or NAT router".

I hope this helps.
