I downloaded vlc-0.8.2 from versiontracker.com as per another post on this site.

I am using that program to watch DVDs using my external Iomega CD-RW drive. The DVD starts up, but it is choppy. Any way to get this running smoothly? I have a 700 MHz PowerPC G3 and 640 MB of memory.

Any ideas? What should I do?

Thanks in advance!

Shimona, welcome to macosx.com

Playing a movie requiers a lot of Input/Outputs and a big flow of information between the drive and the cpu. What you describe may be simply due to the fact that drive may not communicate (through the USB port+cable or the Firewire one ) as quick as required for a fluid playback of the movie.

On slow machine, like your G3, I would suggest to rip the DVD contents onto your internal harddrive (using for instance MacTheRipper) and opening the resulting VIDEO_TS folder directly into VLC
