I am using PsyncX 2.1.1 to perform backup jobs on my Mac osX server 10.3; i use pico crontab to execute this job. It was working fine until recently I found out it wasn't backing up.
I am backing up unto an external fire wire hard drive. Formatting the hard drive, I named it backup, I then noticed using terminal going to the /Volumes/ it had backup and backup 1, using CD command for backup which is the drive name I get an error msg " device not configured" so I reformatted the drive naming it HDbackup and performing the process CD HDbackup and this was fine. But it still didn’t backup. So I manually lunched the PsyncX application and it won’t start up. I have reinstalled the PsyncX application but it still doesn’t work. I have uninstalled and installed it again and it still won’t work.
I am wondering do I need to uninstall and do a reboot and reinstall to fix this or have u got any advice.
Thanks in advance
Your problem could be related to using an old version of the psync binary or you have the binary in the wrong location. I suggest you visit versiontracker.com and download psync-0.69.3 and install it. Note in its readme or installer guide that you also need to copy the binary to another location on the hard drive. I believe this will now make PsynchX work.
If I may make a recommendation, I would suggest you try out the shareware backup program, Deja Vu. Deja Vu works as a preference panel, it's easy to configure is currently compatible up through Tiger, and works across network devices and is fully schedulable. Deja Vu utilitizes psync for the actual backups. For industrial strength backup I highly recommend Synchronize! Pro X and Retrospect. Both are completely network savvy, can create bootable backups, and are support scheduling.
An alternative to psync is rsync (and RsyncX.) Here's an excellent
tutorial on using it for backups.
