For some time now I have had problems downloading files/programs from the net. Things like OS critical updates; Adobe updates; VMware trial software; games; virus definitions. The download run into problems when unpacking - most common error is that verification failed but there are also failures in unzipping files (NAV installer being the most recent).
I have checked a number of forums and found similar problems but none seem to work (eg. mounting from disk utility). The only thing I haven't done is reinstall from OS archive disk as this could entail reinstalling a lot of things (mind-boggling).
I have a MacBook (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRam) running OSX 10.4.11 and also have Parallels 3 (build 5608) running Vista. The download problems seemed to begin with updating the Parallels software. I received the verification error or a checksum error. I resolved this problem by using different download sites. When investigating this problem it was suggested that the ISP provider was at fault. Is this possible?
I have tried the same solution on other software with which I was having problems but it has not worked. I am (as they say in many forums) at my wits end and would greatly appreciate some help.

Reinstalling using the Archive & Install procedure is very simple and I've never heard of more than two programs needing to be reinstalled. This is because Archive & Install keeps the Application folder and all the normal user areas Documents, Music, etc. It only replaces the hidden unix files plus most of Library and System. Read:

Your problem is unlikely to be caused by the ISP. It is most likely a system software issue. Before you Archive & Install, try downloading the 10.4.11 Combo Updater (combination of all updates) from Apple (not via Software Update). Re-Update. This updater replaces a large number of files without doing a complete reinstall. Of course, you may have problems with that, too....
I'm not sure if you've repaired the hard drive using this procedure (Try DIsk Utility):

Hello and thank you for your support. Firstly, yes, I have repaired the hard drive using disk utility. I ran into a problem there as well - it would not allow me to verify the disk. I solved this by following advice I found explaining how to change some scripting. I ran disk utility again today and it verifies fine. I also tried to back up my data today but the burning to CD failed. So I then decided to bite the bullet and attempt the archive & install. When I launch the Tiger installation software it tells me 'Mac OSX 4 cannot be installed on this machine'. I am now at a loss as to what to do next.

Yes, I have the original DVD/CD (only one - Tiger 10.3) and have followed your instructions. The Cd refuses to boot when I hold down the D key (I have tried many times just in case I missed getting in before the grey screen started).
I also managed to open the 10.4.11 Combo Updater using a program called 'Mount' (other advice from the net) but it tells me '...update combined (Power PC) cannot be installed on this computer. Is it possible my MacBook is not a Power PC - its model identifier is MacBook2,1.
I also tried again to burn my files (so that I could pass on the error code) but, miracle of miracles, it burned so that is no longer an issue.

Yes, I definitely meant the MacBook 10.4 DVD.
Your macbook is Intel, and not Power PC.

Hi again. I have run the Hardware test (extended testing) and was told there was no trouble found. Thanks for the info re Power PC. I will await further instructions but, as I go to hospital tomorrow I may not be able to implement your next suggestions. Please don't chuck this request if it takes me four or five days to respond.

I'm just a volunteer, so I don't have control over the automatic closing of help requests, which happens after 3 days of no activity. If you post to the same old Ticket, it will be reopened.
I think you need to reinstall OS X (archive & install preferred). Please make sure you are using the correct install DVD for your Macbook. A PowerPC DVD would give the error message you posted above.
