I wanted to make a voice recording on my Mac i book g 4 with built in microphone , and send it (the voice clip) by e mail to another Mac user..
she has i movie..and sent me a voice clip..i went to my applicatins folder and looked for i movie..i tried to click on it to see if i could install the program, and i got a message which said that the program could not be installed..that it was a 'receipt'..I tried the same for Garage Band..(because i thought i would be able to make a voice clip with that program..
i tried to click on the install item for that..and i got the same:coiuld not install.this is a reciept ..message.
what does that mean.? i somehow thought these programs were part of my OS which is Panther.
That is ok if not..i actually did not expect them to be installed.
i do not need these programs
my questions are: do i infact have those programs on my computer.and if so,how do i open/install them
my next question: is there a simple way to make a little voice clip using what i have already on my mac,and sending it by e mail..
many thanks

Agnes,
All the software provided by Apple, such as iMovie, Garageband etc are already installed on your computer. There is no software on your computer that will need to go through an installation process. The only time you will have to "install" software is when you have either bought some software and it comes on CD or DVD, or if you have downloaded some new software from the internet. Once installed you will not have to install it again.
There is a folder in the the Library folder called "Receipts" which contains documents with names followed by ".pkg". Example: iMovieUpdater3.0.3.pkg or iPhoto504.pkg. If you double click these items you will be taken through an install procedure but it will not complete and provide a message like the one you mention about not being able to install the application.
The reason for this is as follows...
When you install software your operating system (Panther) keeps a record of the installation in the form of those files in the Receipts folder. The files tell Panther what you have on your computer when it looks for updates through "software update" for example. They are also used for other reasons by the system to keep itself properly organised. The main point here is the files with .pkg in the name are not useful to you but useful to the computer. They will not provide any use to you. They must be ignored by you and just left alone for the computer to use. If you alter or remove them it will cause your computer problems.
If you wish to use imovie, iphoto etc then you will find them in the "Applications" folder. iMovie etc. is usually located in the dock as well. Unless you have purposely (or by accident!) moved things into or out of the applications folder, all applications will be in the Applications folder and anything in the Applications folder will be an application (not an installer)!
So, to be clear, if you wish to use imovie open a window in the finder by double clicking your macintosh hard disk. You will see a folder "Applications" - it has a letter "A" made up of a pen, pencil and ruler on the folder. double click this folder and you will see lots of applications including iMovie. Find iMovie and double click it. This should launch iMovie for you. As a short-cut you can also click iMovie in the dock. It should be in there - if its not then you can drag imovie from the applications folder to the dock for easy access.
Regarding the voice clip that was sent to you...
Even though this file was made in iMovie you don't have to use iMovie to hear it. iMovie will have made an audio file that will play in other applications. probably the easiest way to play this file is in Quicktime. If you double click the file you see in your email then you'll probably find that Quicktime launches automatically and plays the file for you.
Audio files come in many different formats including AIFF, WAV, MP3, AAC for example. Many applications can make these files and many can play them. You'll find for example that if you have an AIFF file then iMovie, iTunes, and Quicktime are just some applications that can play them. Use the application that is most convenient or suitable. iTunes is for organising your audio as well as playing it. Quicktime is just for playing the file. iMovie is for making and editing movies. In your case Quicktime would probably be the most suitable application to use.
To make a little voice clip you can use Garageband. This software is designed to record not just voice clips but audio and music in general. Some folk plug a guitar into their computer and record their playing into garageband for eg. Garageband allows you to make complete musical works this way: it allows you to add drum and keyboard parts for eg. For this reason it is probably more complicated than you need.
The simplest solution would be to use Quicktime. Launch quicktime (from the applications folder or the dock) and go to the File menu and select "new audio recording". Note... If this feature is grayed out, and cannot be selected then you need to get quicktime pro from the Apple website (see
www.apple.com/quicktime/pro). You will have to pay (about $30 in US, £20 UK). I digress... after selecting "new audio recording" you will have a simple window with one record button. click the red record button, speak, and your voice should be recorded via your computer's built in microphone. once finished, click the button again. Now you can go to File menu and select "share". click on "email" tab and decide if you wish the file to be small medium or large - the bigger it is the better quality but in your case "small" should provide perfectly good enough quality and you'll have a small file to send in your email. Click the "share" button and you will soon see a new blank email message with your audio recording attached ready to be addressed and filled in.
There are many different applications out there to record speech. Some are free and some cost. It is beyond the scope of this reply to go through all the options. You can record in garageband too remember if you don't want to pay for quicktime pro. its just a little more complicated.
If you want further advice on what other applications you can use or guidance on using garageband for eg may i suggest you place another question in our support section or use the open forums.
Do feel free to get back to me if there is anything else I can help you with or if you need any clarification on what I have written.
Regards
Tom

You will be asked for feedback once this query is closed. All us techs love to get feedback:-) Thanks for using macosx.com
Thank you,Tom..i will wait for the feedback form once this case is closed..
A nice gentleman named Bob answered my first and only question to macosX help..I was so grateful to him..but i answered (perhaps) after the case was closed,.i do not know if he ever recieved my 'thank you'..
You guys are terrific..i have already donated to your site ('your' cuz you all make it up) and i have recommended it to another Mac friend.
ok..briefly,i think i may have deleted Garage Band and i movie..thinking i would never use them..pretty stupid..
i went to my Macintosh hard drive and clicked on it and went to Applications folder and looked for either application (garage band or i movie) and neither were there...the only way i can bring up any information on them is to go to my Mac help and type in Garage Band or I Movie, and i bring up the files and receipts i mentioned..but as far as their being in my Applications folder ..NO GO..
so i guess that ends that.
as far as being able to play my friends clip,i had no time doing that.
my main question (original) was how to make my own video clip.
i have gone to quicktime and would need to upgrade, which i do not think i need.
i have looked for garage band and NO GO
and the same for I Movie.
if i get desperate to make an audio clip..
i will go and submit another question.
if possible, would you respond to the following:
is there any way to
get back "garage band" reinstall Garage Band if i somehow uninstalled it.??
without doing a new install of the original CD's which came with the I Book G 4 when i purchased it?
many thanks
will save the final thanks for the feedback form.!!! he he
