Hello,
Please help us to identify a program by way of which we can rip the VCD foootage and place it on the Timeline of FCP. At present we play the VCD on an external VCD player use ADVC-100 and use capture now on FCP. For ripping the DVD footage we use DVDXDV Pro and it is very convinient to extract DVD footage by simply placing it in the Super Drive.Although I can understand that VCD would give inferior results but if we do not have any other option.

On what OS is the G4 optimised and what version as I have recently upgraded G4/933 MHz/512 MB RAM/ to 10.3.2 and it goes sluggish for project length exceeding 15 minutes onwards.
Can I also ask questions of FCP on this Forum?
Thanks, as I always have appreciated help from this forum's professional attitude.

Hi Naveen,

There's a couple of ways I know of for ripping VCD/SVCD.

The first one uses an unlikely program - Toast. Launch Toast after you've inserted the VCD, choose "Disc Info" from Recorder menu, and you'll see options for exporting. The resulting files should be MPEG.

The second one involves two programs. Use VCD Copy X to get the dat files off the VCD.

http://www.ns-software.com/VCDCopyX/

Then, if necessary, use VCDGear X to convert .dat file to MPEG.

You can find some additional information here:

All Mac OS X releases are optimized for G4, and newer version is usually faster. Your performance bottle neck at the moment would be your memory. You should have at least 1G for doing video work. At the current prices you really should think about maxing it out (1.5G for your QuickSilver). Update to 10.3.9 (if you're not ready to upgrade to Tiger yet) should give you some additional improvement in performance.

You're welcome to ask any Mac-related questions here. But you might want to start another thread for your FCP questions since I don't know anything about it.

Let me know if you need more information.

Charlie, bro! Man man I am touched by your attitude and your concern. You certainly do not belong to this world.
My BIG apologies first for not replying to you. I will try those options on my next working day.
Sorry for all this

Hello Charlie on this hot day of May as I am in New Delhi, India.
Yeah done both the exercises and the results are:

1. Ripped the .DAT files from the VCD and got .mpg files as the output. But the .mpg files when placed on the Timeline of FCP only the video arrives and there is no audio. Although the .mpg files when played on QT PRO play the audio. Hope this is not an issue of the multiplexed audio and video in .mpg

2. Done thru VCD copy and gone to VCD gear X but the results are the same. The xtraction though is a two step process but the audio does not arrive on the TL.

3.I will soon buy additional 1 Gig RAM as we have a sluggish performance on FCP-HD. But is the G4 optimised for Jaguar version 10.2.8 or the Panther version 10.3.9. I once had a problem when I upgraded from 10.3.2 to 10.3.5 with FCP 4.1.1, when during the course of editing, FCP was quitting a lot. So I had to reformat the system to bring it back to 10.2.8 and then it was very stable.

4. Are there no virus for MAC???? As one of our system G5 is plugged in the Broadband connection for downloading updates.

5. I burned 4 session DATA disc using Roxio on MAC but only the last session was read on Windows? What apart from toast are the burning softwares for MAC?

This is quite a big favour from you and I am shure you will take the pain to reply on these.I am again thankful to you in this hour of need and your earlier concern. You are certainly a true class professional in your stride.
Thanks to this forum for spreading awareness on MAC.

Hi Naveen,

As much as I'd like to help you, I'm really not a video editing expert (I'm much better at Mac system, etc). I'd suggest that you post your first and second question in a new topic, so our video experts here can help you.

Both Jaguar and Panther are design with G4 in mind, while Tiger added supports for some G5 native features. However, it doesn't mean that you cannot run Tiger with a G4 processor or that it would be slower (it would in fact be faster, in my experience). It just means with Tiger the G5 systems can really shine. It is not unusual for a point update of Mac OS X to screw up some apps, but keep in mind that 99% of the time the problem can be resolved without reinstalling the system. So my suggestion for you would be to upgrade to 10.3.9, if not Tiger, and see how it goes. If you have questions, do a search in Apple Discussions first (discussions.info.apple.com) since it is the largest Apple technical support forum. A lot of time I actually get answers for people from there, too! Its only problem is its massiveness, and it can be quite hard to find what you want. However, if an update breaks FCP I'm sure it'll stay on top of the forum for weeks.

At this moment there's no real virus for Mac. I'm not saying that there will never be, but it is MUCH, MUCH harder to write viruses for Mac than for Windows. Most *nix systems like Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X are intrinsically more secure than Windows, and Apple is very quick at fixing security issues as they are discovered. In sum, it is not a problem for you to leave your G5 connected to the interest at all times. However, if it is not behind some kind of firewall/NAT (most routers would have that), you should enable software firewall in System Preferences -> Sharing.

When you burn with Toast, make sure that when you drag your existing disc to Toast before adding new files to it. If you start with a blank file list Toast would think you don't want the previous sessions anymore and make them invisible. Mac OS X has had disc burning built-in since Jaguar. However, Apple doesn't encourage multi-session burning (it can be confusing for most people), so it doesn't support it. Toast really is the easiest way to burn discs on Mac (I use it all the time).

Have a good one in that steaming weather.

Charlie
