There are some options to try:

1. Most basic: Repair permissions. Run Disk Utility , click First Aid, and select Repair permissions.

2. Step 2: Navigate to user home directory>Library>Preferences. Find these two files and drag them to the trash

com.apple.isync.plist

and

com.apple.installer.plist

Then reboot and try to run both of those programs.

3. Most involved: Boot from your OS X disk. Select Utilities from the mneu at the top of the screen, then select Disk Utility. Click First Aid as before, only this time select Repair Disk. If the porcedure reports that errors were found, rerun the procedure until you get the message that no errors were found. The do the Repair Permissions thing, and then restart normally.

Let me know if this helps.

I would guess that you also have OS 9 installed on this computer. You haven't stated which kind of Mac you have, but I am guessing it might be one that could boot into OS 9, although not necessarily.

I believe the Mac is trying to decide which the valid startup folder is, and chooses OS X. That's probably why you see the question mark at first, but then it eventually starts in OS X.

Here's a page which may be valid:

What you need to do is hold down the X key when the computer boots. That should tell it to always start up using OS X.

If that doesn't work, then you nay need to reinstall OS X.
