I have many 8mm video tapes recorded on a Sharp Viewcam Video Camera. Can I connect that camera to the iMac, download those videos and burn them to a DVD? If so, what connecting devices do I need?

Barbara,
As long as your camera is a digital video camera, you can. You will need a USB or firewire cable to connect your camera to your computer. I reccomend firewire beacuse it has a higher transfer rate. Go to an electronics store near you and tell them the type of camera you have and they will be able to help you pick out the proper wires. Also, iLife will be needed to burn the videos to DVD using iDVD.

No, this is not a digital video camera. It is an older model. How do I convert the tapes I have to digital format?

Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that. I am going to send your question back to the open pool.

Hi,
You would need a digital camera or a digital video recorder with a analog video line in to digitize your analog video. Some computers also have an analog video capture card, unfortunately I don't think you iMac has one.

Peter,
So there is no way out of this other than to purchase a digital camera? Can I buy software/hardware to install on the Mac that would solve my problem?
On another note, I have been unable to transfer my Quicken program to the Mac. I am giving up and buying another PC for Quicken. Is there a PC you could recommend that would handle the task of digitizing my analog stuff without buying a digital camera?
Or if you could point me to a pertinent website, that would be great. I do not as yet have the technical background to grasp most of this stuff.
Thank you, Barbara

Hi Barbara,
There are several add on devices for your mac. I would recommend an external devices for your needs and level of expertise. Here's a link to one of them.

As to Quicken, you probably have Quicken for PC which will not work with a Mac. Here is a link to Quicken for Mac.

Here's a tip. You can use Google search to find similar products for your needs. There are tons of them. I know, new technology sometimes can be frustrating but over time you would not even remember how you struggled from the start.
; )
Cheers,
Peter

I have Quicken for Mac. It was installed on my machine. I bought Move to Mac for $40. The transfer of info was a disaster. I have given up trying to solve it and am just going to buy a new PC. There are many downsides to moving to a Mac, I do wish I had just bought a $500 Dell. I paid $3000 so I could have these headaches, and now I'm ending up with a new PC anyway.
