Hello,
I am not a gamer, so I don't need flaming speed. I have a G5 2.5 PowerMac with an ATI 9600 card. I would like to upgrade to a speedier card. Does anyone have any suggestions. I'm looking to spend between $300 to $400.

Hello Douglas,

Any particular reason you need a faster card if you're not a gamer? Or do you mean you might play some games but top of the line performance isn't your main objective? OS X speed can greatly improve depending on how much RAM you have.

If you really want a video card however, I'd recommend the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition. It's a G5 only card with 256 MB of RAM. It's significantly faster than a Radeon 9800 (depending on what you're planning to do) and below your price range.

Other World Computing current sells then for $249 with a mail in rebate that cuts the price down to $199.

The next card up in terms of performance are $500. Those would be the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT (available from Apple and possibly some other sources) and the ATI Radeon X800 XT (available at most Mac e-tailers). Both of those cards are also much faster than the 9800 but, like the 9800 vs the 9600, you may not notice much of a performance improvement if you're not using an application which can take advantage of all the horsepower.
