I have a powerbook (no built-in camera) and an iMAC (no built-in camera). I see that iChat supports video conferencing, but when I went to Compusa, all of the cameras are only for PC's. At the apple store, the Apple camera is $150 and too big to carry around with my laptop. Is there a convenient and less expensive camera that I can use? Is there some software that I can use to adapt a windows camera to work with my apples?

Thanks,

Sheldon

Thanks for the tip. I have MACAM working now, but I don't think it is compatible with iChat. Is it true that you need an iSight camera to work with iChat or will this software give me a solution that will work? I have the camera working, but iChat is still reporting that it doesn't see a camera.

Thanks,

Sheldon

Well, I do not use iChat but

On this French site
http://www.osxfacile.com/ichat.html

they say in summer

(1) either you have a compatible camera or you must install the IOXperts driver
http://ioxperts.com/products/webcamx.html

Then you can check if the camera works..outside iChat;. by using this player
http://www.schubert-it.com/videoviewer/
or through iMovie.

(2) But that's not all; you have to force iChat to see the camera using

http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/

Otherwise, Mercury (http://www.mercury.to/index.php?sub=Mac) is a good videoconferencing alternative to iChat

Well, I do not use iChat for chat, because iChat was far too restrictive in the protocols it handled; now, for years, I use Adium
