Hey I have a few questions about video files on macs. Im a total newbie to this and a macs in general. I download movies and videos of live concerts from a bit torrent forum. They are always in VOB file format and split up into multiple parts. Is there a way to join all these files and watch them as one non stop playback? Also, are VOB strictly mac files? Can i burn these VOB files to dvd and veiw them on a PC with windows, or do they need to be converted to something? Please any information is appreciated.

Hi Charles,

VOB files are the native format for DVDs. Did your download include any other files? If it's a raw DVD rip, it should contain some .BUP and .IFO files, too, all located in a folder called VIDEO_TS. If all these are present, you should be able to burn it straight to a DVD (with the appropriate software), which will play in any DVD player. No conversion necessary.

To play these files from your HD, there are two main options:
1. If it's a complete VIDEO_TS folder, open OS X's standard DVD Player, select "Open DVD Media" from the File menu, select your VIDEO_TS folder, and then play it.
2. Use VLC ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc ). It can play both VIDEO_TS folders and loose VOBs.

Note that individual chapters from a DVD might be split across multiple VOBs, so it's definitely neater and simpler to open the entire VIDEO_TS folder and let VLC (or DVD Player) deal with the chapters the right way.

Hope this helps,
-Matthew
