vmware fusion froze on me trying to copy some large files across from my mac os. I had to reboot the mac and now when I click on run in vmware fusion for my windows session I get the following error 'a disk error occured' and when I press ctrl alt del, I get the same message again.
I can load a new install of windows but the problem is I need some files that I have not backed up in a while, so my question is, is there any way to get those files or recover my windows session?
Do the files exist anywhere on the the mac hard drive that I can copy into the new install of windows?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you using Bootcamp as your partition, or just a standard VMware image file? It is possible to mount the disk image files, I will see which utility will work for you. I have done this on other OS, but not on the Mac, yet.
The problem here is that if the vmware disk image is corrupted, you may not be facing a rosy end if you don't have a backup. If "windows" is corrupted on the disk image, then this should be easy to resolve by mounting the virtual drive and getting the files you want off of it, or just re-installing Windows, on top of itself. No formatting the drive, just another install to fix the broken version.
I'll get back to you in a few.

I am using a standard vmware image. I don't use bootcamp. It crashes when it tries to load the vmware screen before windows starts loading. I have found a backup of some files that are quite recent but there is others that are quite old so if I could get them back that would be great.
I did install a new version of windows as I could not see an option for recovering from the old one as I don't think it gets to the point of loading windows. I think the crash happens with vmware loading.
I have been told there may be a program to read the image file but I don't know if that is true or what the program is. Is the file located under the virtual machine folder with a .vmwarevm extension? Is this the file I need or a file inside that image? There is a .vmdk inside that file which is the file I think I need to view.
Thanks for your response and I hope this extra info helps otherwise I will keep trying.
Cheers,
