I have a number of customers that have ProTools, so I understand your reluctance to apply any OS X upgrades. However, looking at this Digidesign link - http://archive.digidesign.com/compato/osx/os.cfm -
there does not seem to be any trouble with updating to 10.3.8, if you already have 10.3.5 I don't think I would go beyond the 10.3.8, until you choose to upgrade to version 7 of whatever you are using from ProTools.
The combo updater to 10.3.8 may be helpful with your other problems. If you have talked to Digidesign, and they tell you not to upgrade, then there you are...

I would consider going from hotmail to AOL a major step backwards, but I suppose you have your reason for doing that. And, AOL webmail, too, which, in my experience, is not a good player... But, you could consider calling AOL tech support (when you will discover why I don't have a good opinion about AOL.)
Why don't you just use the email service that your internet provider gives you? And if you are unlucky enough to still be a paid AOL customer, you should consider just using the AOL software. At least that works for email.

My ranting aside, there's plenty of other browsers, more than just FireFox, and Netscape, which both come from Mozilla, so there would be some reason they would respond similarly. Now, Navigator 9 is a much improved product over the older Netscape 7, I think.
And then there's: Camino, Shiira, OmniWeb, Opera, Sunbird, Seamonkey, a few others, and even Internet Explorer might be worth a try to see if that works for you.

The Digidesign site is terrible to try to find out information about older versions of ProTools.

If you use ProTools to make money, you should contact Digidesign directly about support and upgrades.
In my opinion, you should be able to update to 10.3.8 without problem. DON'T do this unless you are sure it's OK with your ProTools setup. You won't update QuickTime unless you update to 10.3.9, which you DON'T want yet.

Just another opinion - if you have only 384 MB of RAM memory, you should consider adding to that. Your eMac can go up to 1GB of memory, which is 512MB in each of both slots available.
That simple upgrade (doesn't affect your software at all) will give you a smoother running system, with less of those spinning beachballs (I bet you see those fairly often).
If your RAM memory listing here is incorrect, and you have maxed out your memory (I would recommend it), then you are OK.

I would guess that you need PC-133 SDRAM, but yours could be newer.
If you are comfortable with posting the serial number for your Mac, I could tell you exactly which eMac you have, and which memory you should shop for.

The serial number will be inside the little door for the CD drive.

i got it in 2003 i will check # later...B

That actually answers my question. eMacs sold in 2003 do not use anything newer than PC-133 memory.
So, you can upgrade up to 1 GB with 2 x 512 MB PC-133 SDRAM. Any good memory supplier will be able to help you with getting the correct memory.
Very easy to install memory in your eMac. Just open the small panel on the bottom of the computer. You'll see the memory slots, there's not much more inside the little compartment.

does it matter which slot you put it in.i have never done it.do you think it will make it run a little faster and smoother.less beachballs?
DeltaMac - Sep 3, 2007 - 8:09 pm

No, you already have memory in both slots, so increasing to more memory means that you remove some from one, or both slots. It makes no difference which slot you use, as long as the memory is the correct type.
I will predict that you will see less beachballs, and your system will be more stable - less freezing and other problems. This will not cure every possible cause for those, but I think you will be happy with a smoother system. Keep in mind that this does not make you system faster, it will still have the same processor, etc. but more memory will help your system run at its best.

Hi,

This may not directly relevant to your most recent question, but as a ProTools user myself (albeit 7.3 now) I have had some exposure to OS/PT update issues/problems/hell.

Firstly, I strongly suggest NOT to use your PT partition for everyday stuff. It makes life SO much easier if you have one partition with just a minimal (custom install leaving out everything non essential) OSX installation plus PT/music stuff, then another partition with your everyday OSX/apps/drivers/stuff.

This way you can get PT working right and never upgrade that partition's OS again, and upgrade/install/mess around to your heart's content on the other partition/OS. Plus, then you can clone the PT partition with Carbon Copy Cloner and revert to it when/if something goes screwy.

It's a very slight pain rebooting into PT mode for music and back again for everyday stuff, but at least your worlds will not collide like they have been.

I am assuming that you have an external firewire drive for recording PT sessions to: if not, it is a highly recommended (and ever-cheaper) acquisition, and makes life MUCH easier in so many ways.

There are several proven strategies for setting up a dual-boot PT system, but they vary depending on several factors, like: how full is your internal hard disk?; do you have a decent sized external drive?; how reluctant are you to backup your docs and reinstall OSX and apps from scratch?; etc etc.

Let me know if you'd like more info/explanation on this, I am most happy to help if I can.

Without doubt running ProTools and your everyday stuff from the same partition will lead to ever-worse problems, whatever vintage your gear and software.

Please do let me know if this helps and if you need further assistance, as our free support depends on your feedback.

Cheers,
Alex.

PS: re the RAM issue- two 512MB sticks would be ideal, but
even one 512MB stick of RAM added to the larger of your current sticks (256MB) would give your trusty eMac a huge boost in speed, stability and longevity.

The easy way is to reinstall your OS and internet/everyday apps to a fresh partition and update it to the latest version, and keep your ProTools system separate. Given that you seem reluctant to investigate this, i will return your question to the pool in case someone else can suggest a more efficient or elegant solution to your immediate problem.

All the best with it.
Cheers.
