I have a Mac OSX laptop that I purchased in 2002. I am not able to view Hotwire or Orbitz websites. I have downloaded the Apple Safari, as well as updated versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer, but I am still unable to view these websites. Please advise as to what I need to do in order to view these. Thank you

hi
First run software update from system preferences, if you have done that, to get latest version of safari. (If you have never done that, do it until software update finds nothing to update)
If this does not work, try firefox (
www.mozilla.com)

I have run the software updates from system preferences. It doesn't change anything. The updated version of apple safari and netscape are on my desktop, but I don't know how to update the web browser with it. When I click on it, it doesn't do anything. I am still not able to view hotwire, orbitz, cheaptickets, etc.

If you have run software update it automaticly updates your browser. It is generally good idea to keep your applications in your applications folder and not in the desktop, you can have icons of your programs in the dock. You can justa drag them from app.folder to the dock and launch them from dock.
I found it hard to believe you have netscape, there is no netscape for mac os x.. Or do you mean firefox?
If you do not have firefox go to their webpage, mozilla.com and download it. after download you just have to install it, it automaticly installs to your app. folder. Then you can use it and try if those webpages work with that.
I must say that I have no problems visiting hotwire.com, or cheaptickets, so safari should really work with those pages.
You could check from safari preferences and secuurity tab that you have plugins, java and cookies enabled. and start safari from your app. folder. not from desktop. if you cant find it in app.folder, drag and ddrop it there from desktop and run software update then try.
Good luck

I've run the software update and finally got safari to load and it pops up saying that that specific application is only for mac osx 10.3 or newer. what should I do now? Should I try firefox? will that allow me to use it since I only have a mac osx 9?
thanks for all the advice, slowly but surely I'll get this figured out.

Yes, as Dale said you might have something wrong here.
It seems to me that either you are using os 9 (There is no osx9)
If you could check the about this mac tab in your computer and report what os version you are using?

It is a OSX 10.1.5
When I tried to download firefox, it all seemed to be going well last nite, but then it wouldn't let me save it on the tool bar that has all the icons such as finder, system preferences, internet explorer, microsoft word, etc.
I am getting frustrated. It seemed to all be coming together with the safari and then it wouldn't allow me to use it.
help!

Just save the firefox to your app folder. If you find it is not working, then open disk utility (Found in applicatios/utilities) and click repair permissions.
Then try to safe firefox.
I would very strongly recommend you to update your os to 10.3 (panther) or 10.4 (tiger) you can find panther used nowadays very cheaply. And i think that would fix all your problems as it will have the new safari. If you are unsure of the installation just ask some help here or from your dealer.
Tiger needs a bit more newer mac, so if you tell me the facts about your mac I can tell you if it is ok to upgrade to it.
I think that your problems are caused because you are using os x and os 9 both and when you save or change folders or apps in os9 that can affect
os x in a way that apps wont open etc. So unless you have reason to use os 9 (because of some application you do not have for os x) do use os x only.
So to conclude, tru repairing permissions. But the bottom line is, that if possible upgrade your os.
