I've been using Microsoft Word and saving a Word document as a web page. So far, its been fine. But I thought, wouldn't it be nice if the ftp function was integrated into the software and it would update the page automatically. That way I could have a browser open and just refresh the page to check what I'm doing. Is this available?
Right now, to check what I've done, I have to:
Save Word document as web page (3 clicks)
Upload my new data via ftp (more clicks)
Refresh my browser (only 1 click)
This wastes a lot of time for me, as a beginner, because I'm not sure if I'm doing what I need to do until I see it displayed in my browser.
Perhaps some sort of preview function would work well too.

Hi Robin
When you save the web page in Word, drag the html file to an open Safari window (or any browser) and it will display before uploading.
To do this with everything integrated you would need to use a web.
Take a look at
RapidWeaver

The dragging thing didn't work with Opera, Camino or Firefox, but it worked fine with Safari. Neat trick. That will save a pile of time for now. Many thanks.
BTW, do you happen to know what letters I need to add to a Microsoft Word document (that I'm saving as a web page) hyperlink to make it open in a new window?
For instance this is the link:
http://webpage.com
I tried adding
TARGET="_blank">Anchor text
to the end so it looks like this:
http://webpage.com TARGET="_blank">Anchor text
but Word adds a bunch of characters
%20TARGET=%22_blank%22%3EAnchor%20text%3C/A
MS Word seems to translate it differently. I don't understand the html commands yet. But I need to get my links to open in new windows right away. If only there was a simple command I could add to the hyperlink....

Also I need to know how to type a webpage without it turning into a hyperlink on a webpage like this. I need to add some character(s) to it so it displays the text only without the changing color, etc.

Robin
MS Word doesn't do HTML like a web program would, it doesn't have all the functionality.
Here are a few HTML help pages that you can get a lot of info from;

So you're saying that it is impossible to get MS Word to have a link open in a new window?
bobw - Apr 28, 2007 - 1:16 pm
I don't know if it is or not. I haven't created any web pages in some time, and I never used Word for that purpose.
You might want to post on our forums. You'll get a lot of views and there may be someone that would know.

OK - thanks. Again...

Would you say its wiser to post questions on the forums first or here first?
bobw - Apr 28, 2007 - 2:53 pm
On here, if someone that has a lot of knowledge sees your question it would be better, but we're all volunteers and various skills.
On the forums, all who browse the forums will see your question. If someone knows how to help, they'll jump in. You get a lot more exposure on the forums.
You can post both here and the forums.

Well I'm very happy to report that I got it working by
View, HTML Source, then inserting
target="_blank"
after the hyperlink address and before the name of the hyperlink. It was a little strange saving, but it worked.
It will be nice to really understand web page authoring. That comes later. For now, I'm set. Many thanks.
RobinS - Apr 28, 2007 - 9:34 pm
Well I thought I had it working.....lol.
MS Word seems to erase that
target="_blank"
insertion on all of the pictures. It worked for a while, now its gone. I view the HTML Source, added it, saved it, then saved the document as a web page, loaded it up via FTP, and then it didn't work.
I know I'm so close....but no cigar.

I want to copy and paste my text document from MS Word to the web page authoring software. I'm trying Rapidweaver 3.5.1. But this looks like it was made for people with 14" monitors at 640 x 480. The text line width is about 35% of the width of my 1280 x 1024 19" LCD 4:3 screen, and there is a large blank area on the left that I can't seem to eliminate. Have you used it? If not, what do you suggest? I need my text from side to side, not huge blank areas wasting space with no space wasting margins and headers. I need to cram the maximum amount of information in the smallest amount of space. Later I'll make it pretty and stylish.
I can't believe there isn't some sort of page layout menu item in Rapidweaver. Hopefully I just missed it.
bobw - Apr 29, 2007 - 9:44 am
No, I haven't used RapidWeaver myself. Check it's preferences and all the menus to see if there is anything you can setup the way you want it.
The last time I did any web pages I used Adobe's GoLive;

Here's all of Adobe's web programs;

I would suggest getting GoLive if you're going to be creating web pages/sites.

I've got Creative Suite somewhere. Would it be in that? Its at least a year old, but that should give me an idea.
bobw - May 1, 2007 - 9:09 am
GoLive won't be, but InDesign and others will be in it.
