I have a Powerbook with Mac OSX 10.3.6. As of tuesday this week, tinypic.com and photobucket.com won't load. The pictures linked from those webites don't load either. I have tried reinstalling Safari, deleting my cache/cookies and resetting the browser. I also tried using IE and Netscape but neither website will load there either. What do I do?
Hi Sophie,
Ok... you have a PBook running 10.3.6 and can't get any browser to work.
First, Sophie, did you just do the 10.3.6 update and then this started happening? Or have you had the 10.3.6 installed for awhile BEFORE your browsers died?
First, take IE for Mac off your PBook. Microsoft is no longer writing updates for that particular version and does not intend to. Here is a link to read when you can get a browser to work:
http://news.com.com/2100-1045_3-1017126.html
"Although Microsoft may continue to provide security and performance updates, no major new releases are planned, Microsoft Product Manager Jessica Sommer told CNET News.com. Sommer said that, with the emergence of Apple's Safari browser, Microsoft felt that customers were better served by using Apple's browser, noting that Microsoft does not have the access to the Macintosh operating system that it would need to competer".
Netscape is ok but not as reliable as Safari.
Safari is by far the safest and most reliable browser for your PBook running 10.3.6. Having more then 2 browsers at the most on a hard drive can cause conflicts. The fewer the conflicts, the more stable your PBook will run :-)
Next, I suggest you update to 10.3.9. Here is the link for that:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...pdate1039.html
Keeping your operating system up to date is extremely important. This particular update includes security features in Safari that you need.
OK.. BEFORE you delete Safari from your Mac, I want you try this first:
go to: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences
Double click the Preferences folder. Locate this file:
com.apple.safari.plist Drag that file to the Trash, then empty the Trash. Try launching Safari and see if it will load the
www.apple.com web site.
Sophie, if we delete all your browsers, you can't download a new clean Safari browser from
www.apple.com. You said, you've reinstalled it, but was that a NEW download or from your system CD?
One other thing that would help me help you is to find out the Safari version you have on your Mac. Now, you can find this out WITHOUT launching Safari. Here's how:
Click on the Apple logo top left of your desktop in the Menu. Then click where it says: About This Mac. Then click
"More Info"... your System Profiler will open. Where it says: Contents you will see Hardware/Network/Software. If it isn't already clicked, click the triangle adjacent to the word Software so it's pointing down. Now, select Applications. Scroll down to where it says: Safari. Look to the right and it will indicate the version number. An example would be: 2.0.1 yours may not be that exact number but it's close.
The reason I need to know is because if you do the 10.3.9 update for your operating system, you'll need a newer version of Safari to run with it.
AND... I know this is kinda overwhelming, but I want you to be able to enjoy the internet and surf the web and have all your software up to date, so it just takes some tweaking... and we will get you there :-)
What internet service do you use? AOL? Earthlink? It would help to know that too... and are you on dial up or cable??
Are you by any chance near an Apple Store that you can get to and get a disk for Safari??? You obviously can't download one from the web without a working browser.
And one more thing for now. You need to run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. YOu can find Disk Utlity in the Applications>Utility folder. Double click on Disk Utility and that window will open. Select your MacintoshHD in the panel of the left. Click the Repair Permissions button. It takes about a minute to run. Quit Disk Utility and try to launch Safari.
Also, I'm sure you have a Safari icon in your Dock. Drag it off... it will go "poof"... LOL that's ok. These icons can get corrupted. Soon as you launch Safari again, click the Safari icon in the Dock, and click Keep in Dock. That will give you a fresh icon.
I've systematically gone thru a bunch of troubleshooting things here and I hope we get you going and surfing the web again pronto!
Post back... let me know the info I requested and if any of the suggestions helped.
Carolyn :-)
