I can't get my g4 to start-up right. I keep getting a Black screen with text on every start-up. I have run disk warrior and Techtool and and the System First Aid. Nothing works.
Also, there is no chime at start-up.
Is this repairable?

Season's Greetings!
HI Rolando,
Oh dear... which G4, PBook, iBook, ??? and you posted in the OS 10.4.x but can you please tell me exactly which operating system. Have you updated to 10.4.3??
When you ran Disk First Aid, did you run it from the system CD that came with your G4? Since you can't boot without freezing I'm assuming that is the case. OK.. if you used the system CD and ran Disk First Aid, when you clicked on Verify... did it report any errors??? If so, what were they? This is important to know in order to troubleshoot this issue for you.
What exactly is happening when you run DW or TTPro? Can you at least boot from either one???
Get back to me and I'll try to help you through this. And thanks for choosing Macosx.com.
Regards,
Carolyn :-)

Carolyn,
Thanks for the response.
I am running the latest Tiger Tiger on a G4 733 PowerMac.
I got a font error, so I restarted. I was greeted by a black screen with white text. I tried restarting several times, but nothing changed.
I have used DW, TT and Disk First Aid. They all say the disk is fine, but I still get the black screen on restart.
I also noticed I am not getting the chime at start-up. Any suggestions?

Carolyn,
I got it back up. I reinstalled the system essentials and everything came back up.
Hopefully, I won't see that again. Do you know what the black screen is?
Thanks Again,
- R

Wow... wonderful1 ... the black screen... did it have a lot of white text on it??? That would be a kernel panic and nothing really to worry about... just Restart the Mac.
One thing you might do to keep your Mac in stable running condition.
Get Onyx.. it's a FREEware utility with maintenace and cleaning scripts, fixes the Help Viewer if it freezes, cleans out logs and caches. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...ties/onyx.html
It's available at the Apple site very safe to download install and use. I use it once a week without fail.

Will do. What do you think about Cocktail? Someone recommended that I use it to maintain my Mac. I guess it does what Onux does.
Thanks again.

HI!
Cocktail is great! It has more bells and whistles then Onyx but then Onyx is free. I'm not totally certain, but I think you can set Cocktail to run on a schedule that you can set up... and you can't do that with Onyx. Basically, they do the same thing. Just my experience, but I like to see the cron tasks being done and you can save the log files in BOTH applications just in case. (And print them out).. might come in handy if your system crashes. If you took your Mac in for repair you can prove you ran the cron tasks... very very important task for Macs.

I will keep that in mind and a record of cron tasks with it.
Thanks for all your help. Happy Holidays.
