Description:
I recently entered the MAC world --most of my experience was with a PC supported by a great technical services group in the corporate world. Anyway, I'm at home now working on my husband's MAC and trying to make it more efficient for us. I'm a new Internet customer, and frustrated because of our modem connection (we use Teleport Gold which is a 14.4 modem I believe). We have 2 phone lines--one for voice calls primarily and the other an answering machine for my husband's business which we also use for Internet access. We need to set up our modem so that faxes can be received automatically to our internet/answering machine line. We also need to upgrade our modem speed. Someone has recommended the Diamond Supra 56K modem and before I go out and purchase it I wondered if you could tell me whether or not the fax is easy to use, will it do what I need it to, and can I expect much better i.e. faster Internet access than I currently have from home? We're "used to" using the Global Village fax although find it not particularly easy to use. Also, I recently purchased Dr. Solomon's VIREX and wold like to know whether or not I should install it before the new modem, etc. Actually my built in memory is 40M, not 32. And finally, we also have a MAC LCIII which has a Teleport Platinum modem, no OS8 installed, 8M built in, 30M available on disk, and 15M after restart (what does that mean?) which we purchased for $100 for our 4th grader. I'd like to hook this up to the Internet as well, but imagine we'll need to do some upgrading as well. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help. (Better not send me a file update or program because I'm afraid to install anything new and don't have a virus protection installed yet).

Judy,
First let me thank you for giving us here at Nowonder the opportunity to help you with your questions. I am Nevin of the Mac support staff. Unless you have particular problems with a virus, viruses are very rare on the mac, they do exist but the chances of downloading on is remote. I have been on the internet for four years and have yet to use virus protection on a regular bases. I choose software from a reputable company as they have already done virus scans for you. Next the modem, it really is up to you which modem you choose, the modem I chose is a Supra Fax Modem 28.8 with the fax software it is all automatic (extremely easy too). They make a 56.6 modem but the fastest anyone can download faxex is 14.4 anyway and the fastest you can download software by law is 42k. your internet provider probably has all 33.6 modems and they aren't expected to upgrade for atleast a year or two. You can call them and ask them to be sure. It usually comes down to cost for most folks... Here are a few upgrading sites for you to browse around in, they will give you the options and cost of upgrading an older mac.
"Low End Mac" http://www.mactimes.com/lowend/ specializing in all macintoshes

"Newer technology" http://www.newertech.com/ specializing in new upgrade boards

The LCIII is running which system? The memory is being upgraded thru the harddrive ie. the harddrive is pretending to supplement your memory. Virtual memory.
Most software tells you to turn off virus protection software to load itself anyway so you can install the modem software first then just have it scan the harddrive for viruses. Once again macs are not normally targeted by viruses however, Symantec has a news letter to keep you informed if they find any. Here is there address: http://www.symantec.com/ I hope this information is helpful and if you need any more information just reply e-mail me and I will be happy to help. Welcome to the world of Mac!

Best regards,
Nevin
