Disk utility crashes when launched, so it's not like I can repair permissions install apps, etc.
Tried to clone the drive and salvage what I could, won't take the administrator password, and I even reset it to make sure, no good.
Terminal window is just a red dot, I was told the a system font was missing, I think Monaco, won't let me install that because it won't take a password. I inherited this mac in a prepress dept and have no idea of it's history, where do I start????
Formatting and starting from scratch is really the last thing I want to do or have time for.

Howdy!
Can you first back up all the data and then update your system to 10.3.9? Might help. I seem to remember 10.3.7 being a really buggy, worthless update. If you have a system disk you can boot with it and "repair disk" (do NOT reinstall OS X): File/Open Disk Utility/Repair Disk.

If you don't have the system disk, boot up in Safe Mode: restart/hold command + s/enter "fsck -f" to force a system check. This might catch whatever directory blocks may be corrupted, as your computer seems to be exibiting symptoms of.

Here's more on particular printing issues/bugs related to 10.3.7:

Let me know what happens.

I've downloaded the updates and Disk utility wont let me run it either off line or on. I neglected to tell you that I already have booted from the system disk it let me repair permissions but no change. I never got a good instruction on how to do the fsck-f, I'll try it, will that just check it? or fix it?
Norton was no use either.
Thanks in advance.

fsck -f, type this in the command prompt when you reboot in safe mode (it will be a black screen with white text) and should fix problems.

Never use Norton on OS X. They gave up on macs when OS X came out because OS X continually optimizes itself--that's why it crashes so infrequently.

I get a root# prompt and then it doesn't recognize the command, what can I be doing wrong?
I uninstalled Norton on my TiBook btw.
Rats, I just bought that copy!

type this in exactly as shown: fsck -y
if that gives you a message then type in this: fsck -f to force the action.

You might have to do an Erase and Install to get things working again, unfortunatley.

The Mac's in use today, so I can't try that until this afternoon. Your personal opinion, who's disk utility and backup utility do you like?
Tri Backup looks pretty good, but I've been away from the Mac world for about a year and a half and I've missed alot.

Micromat's Tech Tool Pro is the best disk utility by far.

As for back up, we use Retrospect for the mac but it's not nearly as good as their pc version.

I had one back up program screw my data and I ended up losing about 8 hours of work so I do it manually these days…sorry I have no real recommendation for that.

Lacie drives come with Silverfast back up program which seems to do the job pretty well.

Well, thanks for all of your help, I did the fsck -f said the disk was ok. It's hardly ok, looks like erase and install for me.
