I find it very aggravating not being able to Cut instead of Copying always. Moving things by the mouse is sloppy and extremely inefficient; very prone to errors. There must be a better solution to moving files. Of should I use a different program? I must resize the column wideth in Finder hundreds of times a day. That is unbelievable that they can't auto size the column width for the widest file name at all times.

What's your question? "Cut" is under the Finder's Edit menu.

In Mac OS X, you can't, as you noted, "cut" a file or folder. If you want to delete it, drag to the trash or use the right click option to move to the trash. If you want to relocate it, drag it from one place to another. the Help menu in Mac OS X will give you a huge number of both well known as well as lesser known key combinations which will allow you to manipulate files/folders as much as you like. There are also dozens of shareware utilities which will enhance these options and make them more accessible. They are all available at versiontracker.com and macupdate.com.

What view do you use (column or list) that requires you to rezie the column width "hundreds of times a day?" Think about what would happen if in either column or list view, the Finder autoresized the window for widest file name. If you had a file name like "File copied from Jack's computer yesterday: and you were in column view and the Finder autoresized that column, chances are pretty good that the other columns in that column view would extend off the screen (unless you used a tiny font or have a very large monitor at very high resolution). That's not a workable option for most users. I don't like column view–I still use list view–but in both views, if you hover your cursor over the file, the full expanded name of the file will appear, so you know exactly what that file is.

Nevertheless, I would write Apple and ask them to make it an option to do what you like, and they make incorporate it; you are by no means the only person for whom this is an annoyance and there are a lot of other criticisms of the Finder I won't even get into. Suffice it to say that in 10.5, the Finder will be much different and the focus will be on finding files that you need rather than to have them all presented to you in some Apple-approved away.

You can't cut a folder to another location? That seems utterly ridiculous. There must be a way. Imagine copying 15 out of 100 files and then trying to remember what they were so you can delete them from the previous location. Insane. I'm moving stuff - not deleting - deleting stuff is easy. As for the shareware options - either they have Cut or they don't. Its the most common command in moving files. Moving with a mouse is prone to endless errors. Its so easy to drop it into the wrong folder when you're doing a lot of file organizing.

I'm using Column View 99% of the time. Obviously if I was using List there is no column width as its only one column. I don't understand the point of your question. Most file names aren't very long - but are much longer than after I have abbreviated them. I'm trying to keep everything within about about 15 characters. "Hovering your mouse over a file"....absurd.....imagine doing that with hundreds of files?

But I will try List view more - thoiugh I'd love to have something like Windows Explorer - that is a simple program that splits everything in 2 parts - do you know of a Mac program that is like Windows Explorer? Perhaps because I've used Windows more its more logical to me. But it sure had an efficient grasp on the tasks necessary.

But to not have a Cut command.......why on earth would they have it under Edit then have it greyed out? When would it ever be used? Or how can I activate it?

Sometimes Apple programs seem to venture into the realm of the unexplained. Thankfully its only occasionlly. Hope to hear from you soon.
