Which Macs can start in OS 9? I bought a 15" flat screen iMac with OS X and wish to 'downgrade' to 9.2.2. What's the best way to do it? Do all 15" flat screen iMacs permit booting in OS 9?

David,
This
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86209 tells you which computers only start up in OS 10 the rest do OS 9.

Thanks for the timely answer Chuck - it took only 6 hours and I'm in Australia where everything takes at least 7 hours.
The answer I was looking for (which flat panel iMacs can't start in OS 9?) was:
iMac (Flat Panel) with serial numbers of xx303xxxxxx or later.
That said, where can I find the serial number under System X. What's the equivalent to the 'Apple System Profiler' under OSX?

You can option click on the Version number of About this Mac under 10.4 and System Profiler is available there also as a button that says More Info otherwise it is in your Utility Folder.

Chuck, you're a whiz.
I am grateful and amazed at your responsiveness.
One more thing - what percentage of Mac users do you estimate still use OS 9?

David,
Not a whole lot although my Girlfriend is still using OS 9 but is finding out that she is missing out on a lot of features such as iTunes Music Store and iPhoto which makes me wonder why are you going back?

Chuck, once again, thanks for your responsiveness. I actually booted into X and used Help to find the last answer about the serial number and shouldn’t have bothered you with it.
My questions to you were actually on behalf of someone else in another country (UK) who found himself with a 15” iMac which refused to install OS 9. He knows little about computers and I’ve taken it on myself to support him via email. Because I use OS 9 I told him that he too, would have to use it to receive my support.
I don’t know whether your last question (about using OS 9) is rhetorical, but I’ll answer it briefly anyway.
My Mac has both 9 and X on it and I boot into X (option key) to feed my Pod. I have the latest iTunes and also a System 9 version. I can’t exchange playlists (which are all under X), but at least OS 9 can share the same library. I haven’t found a script that exports playlists into the 9 version.
The reason I don’t use X is that I work on my Mac all day (I’m a writer) as opposed to just using it occasionally. Word, Photoshop and FreeHand are my main tools, but I also make extensive use of QuicKeys and other diary and reminder tools. Some of these would work in Classic, but there would be too much tweaking. Classic won’t start up with all my OS 9 extensions. It sounds like I have a top-heavy clunky system, but it is absolutely stable and I can’t remember my last hang. I have massaged my extensions and applications into total obedience.
I would also miss window shades (the ghosts are too slow), pop-up folders, ResEdit, my extensive AliasMenus, Greg’s Browser tiles (despite the dock), and the utter familiarity of my system. I know that many products are now available under X—and I have many—but I don’t want to replicate it all again. It sounds odd, but I find System X too slow and awkward, apart from starting up. I realise that I’m in a technical cul de sac but it suits my working practices and I’m very productive. You know what they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Being an operating system man from way back I would be sucked into using Unix and don’t have the free time to master it properly. There’s nothing I can’t do on OS 9 that makes me want to change (except my Pod).
Once again, thanks for your help. But I really was curious about the ‘official’ number of OS 9 users for I feel that it’s higher than the numbers bandied about. I’ll bet there are still many System 7 users around! Obviously Apple aren’t going to give out that information and would discourage anyone else from guessing. How would one find out anyway, other than a survey?
Cheers Chuck
ps I wouldn’t pay for music via the Music Store, apart from the fact that’s it’s not available in Oz yet. I go down to my public library (I have a choice of three locally) and borrow eight CDs every couple of weeks. Luckily I’m a classics and jazz man and there are literally hundreds to choose from and new ones arriving regularly. I’ve been feeding Poddie for over a year and am still only three-quarters full. If I want some 50s stuff (Elvis, et al) I use LimeWire.
Instead of iPhoto, I use iView MediaPro which does a good job and produces nice web pages to distribute on CD. One of my friends tells me that iPhoto (the latest) runs like a dog with his 4 Gb library of pics. I suggested he split his library (off the top of my head). Is that possible?
