TICKET ARCHIVE -> Why Is Tiger So Slow?

Hello,

I have upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4. I'm not too thrilled at this point. It is much slower than 10.3.9. I'm running it on a G4 PowerBook 133 GHz with 512 MB of RAM. I'm current on all the latest updates. I've used Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, and Tech Tool Pro 4 to trouble-shoot, but I'm at a loss. Am I missing something? Do I need more RAM? Do you have any optimizing tricks? I hate all these darn beach balls! I would really appreciate your advice.

Thanks,

Randy Holsapple

Dear Randy,

You might have some corrupted preferences somewhere, try the following please?

Create a new user
Log out of old user, and then into new user.
Try some of the "slow" applications.

1) Is it still slow?

Just to be sure, you created a brand new user, not just logged out and then into an already existing user you created before the upgrade?

Your machine should be enough to handle it.(Tiger) Though more memory is always good, it shouldn't be necessary. What do you mean by slow? Can you describe more? Certain apps specifically or all applications? What applications involved?

You can search www.versiontracker.com for utility or optimization files. Some of the more popular are Cocktail and Onyx.

You might also try zapping PRAM ( Hold down the following keys as soon as you start up or restart the computer: Apple+Option+P+R until you hear the start up chimes twice at least.), and trying a Archive and Install of Tiger. (Will archive user settings but do another clean install of Tiger.)

Barring that, I think ya got 2 more choices.

1) Going back to 10.3.9

2) Doing fresh install (Wiping user settings) of 10.4

I've been there and done that. I'm usually a good trouble shooter, but I believe the problem has something to do with upgrading from 10.3.9. I'm going to do a clean install (after I back everything up) with 10.4 and then do the 10.4.1 update my self rather than have "Software Update" perform it. If after that I still have problems I will go back to 10.3.9.

Thanks,

Randy

PS- You wanted examples of what was slow? Just pick any stock application ...

I am sorry I couldn't be of more help. Let me know if you want me to close the ticket, or put it back in the pool for another tech to take a stab at?
