i tried downloading windows media player for mac, but it doesnt work - it wont open the installer.
where do i get it from?

I can't tell you why Win Media Player won't work on your Mac. I can tell you that Microsoft no longer supports WMP for the Mac, and offers a link to some alternate software called Flip4Mac. Download that and you will be able to play some WMP files through your Quicktime player.
